Wortley H. Herring

WILSON -Wortley Harrell Herring , 85, a native of Bertie County, died July 28, 2007. She was the widow of William Carter &uot;Billy&uot; Herring.

Mrs. Herring graduated from Mars Hill High School in Colerain and Atlantic Christian College (now Barton) in Wilson. After graduation, she taught school in Colerain and Wilson. Wortley helped direct the Youth Fellowship, taught Sunday School, was a Circle leader, initiated the preschool program and served as a Deacon and Elder. She was awarded the Church Women’s Lifetime Membership in 1998. Her contributions to the community include service to the Tuberculosis Sanatorium, Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army, Wilson Arts Council and Barton College.

Survivors include her daughters, Connie Collins and Wortley Forbes of Wilson; a sister Betty Jo Linton of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Marvin R. Stephenson

SUFFOLK, Va. – Marvin Randolph Stephenson, 93, a native of Seaboard, died July 30, 2007, in the home of his daughter in Toano, Va. He was the widower of Margaret Elizabeth Howell Stephenson.

Stephenson owned and operated Suffolk Tire Co. for 43 years and was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a life deacon and former trustee of First Baptist Church, Suffolk.

Survivors include his daughter, Sue S. Williams of Toano; one grandson; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church by the Rev. Bill Cashman. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in R.W. Baker & Co. Bessie S. Starboard

CONWAY n Bessie Sawyer Starboard, 69, died July 31, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of James Starboard.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Creeksville Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson.

Mrs. Starboard was a member of Creeksville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, James Lee Starboard of Moyock and Donnie Starboard of Tampa, Fla.; five sisters, Mildred Casper of Lenoir, Evelyn Twiford and Mary Etta Casper, both of Elizabeth City, Georgia Games of Florida and Hilda Johnson of Camden; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Lorraine Defrons

HOLLISTER n Lorraine Mills Defrons, 71, died July 30, 2007 at Hospice of the Peidmont, High Point, N.C.

A funeral will be conducted noon Friday at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Hollister, by the Rev. Ronnie Richardson.

Interment will be at the Mill’s Family Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Roanoke Rapids Chapel H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Uriah Eley

GATES n Uriah Eley, 76, died July 28, 2007 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at Parkers Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Mapleton.

Burial will be in the Eley Family Cemetery.

Viewing will begin Friday at noon at Stallings Funeral Chapel in Gatesville.

A wake will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. also at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel M. Eley; daughter, Wanda Eley English of Chesapeake, Va.; and one grandchild.

Archie Robinson Jr.

AULANDER – Archie Robinson Jr, 51, a native of Boykins, Va, and grew up in Murfreesboro and last resided in Aulander.

He died July 30, 2007 at his residence.

Robinson was a deacon at Mt. Sinai Holiness Church, Ahoskie and last worked at Bennett Box Company in Ahoskie.

Survivors include his mother Clarine Vaughan of Murfreesboro; a son, Archie Robinson III of Murfreesboro; daughters, Renee Robinson of Aulander, Vickie Sue Robinson of Roanoke Rapids; brothers Rudolph Robinson, Landis Robinson, Roy Chester Robinson, Nathaniel Robinson, all of Murfreesboro;

sisters, Brenda Robinson and Julia Robinson, both of Murfreesboro; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander.

John L. Winborne

WINDSOR — John

Lee Winborne, 52, died July 31, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Speller Chapel Disciple of Christ Church, Windsor. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Bernice B. Cherry

WINDSOR — Bernice Britt Cherry, 78, a native of Bertie County, died August 1, 2007 at her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Cornell Watson. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Mrs. Cherry was a retired teacher’s aide.
