William S. Stanley

COLERAIN n William Samuel “Sam Stanley” Stanley, 72, a native of Bertie County, died July 2, 2007 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Stanley retired from Farmer’s Chemical Company in Harrellsville. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sons, Samuel T. Stanley of Newport News, Va., Douglas Stanley of Richmond and Keith T. Stanley, also of Newport News; daughters, Shirley L. Mackey, and Roslyn Stanley Askew, both of Hampton, and Ecomi Virginia Stanley of Upper Marlboro, Md.; sisters, Johnetta Wilson of Suffolk, Josie Knight of Hampton, Pauline Moore of Ahoskie, Carrie Robertson of Miami, Fla., and Shirley White of New York; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Willie C. Gatling

AULANDER – Willie Clarence Gatling, 80, a native of Gates County, died July 2, 2007 at his residence. He was the widower of Mattie Lucille Walker Gatling.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, by the Rev. Wesley Boone. Burial will be in the Boone-Darden family cemetery, Gates. A visitation will be held from 12 noon until time of service at the funeral home.

Gatling was a member of Stoney Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Gates.

Survivors include two sisters, Edna Boone of Eure and Alma Butler of Powellsville; one brother, Percy Gatling of Tunis; and three grandchildren.

Louise P. Boone

BROOKLYN, NY n Louise Porter Boone, a native of Hertford County, died June 27, 2007 at Bishop Mussauero Rehab Center, Brooklyn.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. H.H. Murrill. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., is in charge.

Mrs. Boone was a member of Mt. Sinai, Brooklyn.

Survivors include her husband, William Boone, a native of Harrellsville; and one brother, William Porter “Jr.” of Brooklyn.

William C. Manning

COFIELD n William C. “Billy Conn” Manning, died June 30, 2007, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Thursday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Sherman Daniels. Burial was in the Manning family cemetery, Harrellsville.

Edgar Williams Sr.

AHOSKIE n Edgar Williams Sr., died July 2, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Newsome Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Richard E. Smallwood. Burial was in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Williams was a member of Newsome Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Algora Bell Williams of Ahoskie; four sons, James Williams Jr., Edgar “Pete” Williams Jr., Clarence Williams Sr., Paul Williams Sr., Tony O. Williams Sr., all of Ahoskie; seven daughters, Jeanette J. White, Emma Daniels, and Mary Keemer, all of Ahoskie, Algora Ruffin, Inell Denning, Doris Williams and Christine Williams, all of Raleigh; five brothers, Rev. Charles Henry Williams of Chesapeake, Va., Dec. Herbert Williams of Windsor, George Williams and James Williams, both of Bronx, NY; six sisters, Roberta Clark of Philadelphia, Pa., Emma Bunch of Windsor, Corrine Roscoe and Arlene Taylor, both of Bronx, Josephine Benson of Virginia, and May Jane “Jean” Ruffin; numerous grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Mattie Saunders

WILLIAMSTON n Mattie Saunders, died July 2, 2007 at Martin General Hospital.

John O. Cooke

AHOSKIE n John Oscar Cooke, 59, a native of Bertie County, died July 5, 2007, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Cooke was employed as a casket manufacturer with Freeman Metal Products for 25 years.

Survivors include his sisters, Shirley Sadler and Maggie Benson, both of Ahoskie; and two sons, John O. Cooke, Jr. and Joey Cooke.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Highland Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Raleigh Johnson. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

William S. Stratton

AHOSKIE – William Samuel “Sammy” Stratton, 85, a native of Lawrenceville, VA, died July 5, 2007 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Stratton was a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church, an Army Veteran of World War II, and a retired salesman for W.H. Basnight and Company.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Alston Stratton; and a sister, Elizabeth S. Byrum of Colerain.

A memorial celebration of Mr. Stratton’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Ahoskie United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. John Dutton. Memorial donations may be made to Ahoskie United Methodist Church or the Children’s Day Care Ministries of Ahoskie United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 665, Ahoskie, NC, 27910. Dr. Thomas S. Fleming

TARBORO – Dr. Thomas Smith Fleming, 83, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday at First Baptist Church with Rev. Eric Crowe officiating. Burial will follow in Edgecombe Memorial Park.

Dr. Fleming attended Wake Forest College and graduated from the Southern College of Dentistry, now Emory University in Atlanta in 1946. He practiced in Tarboro since 1949. He proudly served in The U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War.

He was the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Edgecombe Community College since 1979 and served on the Board of Trustees for Campbell College.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise Godbey Fleming; daughter, Sally Fleming Moncure of Lexington, VA; sons, Tom Fleming, Jr. of CA and Dr. James R. Fleming of Columbus, OH; brother, Oliver G. Fleming of Ahoskie, NC; three grandchildren, Robinson F. Moncure of Pasadena, CA, Thomas Clark Moncure of Panama City, FL and Kelly Louise Moncure of Lexington, VA.

WOODLAND – Reva Marie Phillips, 88, died July 3, 2007.

Jesse Matthews Jr.

GATESVILLE n Jesse Thaddius Matthews Jr., 44, a native of New Haven County, Conn.., died July 5, 2007.

A graveside service will be conducted at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Matthews Cemetery in Gatesville by the Rev. James Brown. There will be a viewing in the Hertford County Undertakers Gates Chapel, in Sunbury from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Survivors include his father, Jesse Matthews Sr. of Gatesville; one brother, Keith Lott of Waterbury, Conn.; and two sisters, Shari Wilson of Gatesville and Kristal Brooks of Coates.

Juanita LesCallet

MURFREESBORO – Juanita LesCallett, 85, a native of Washington, D.C., died June 29, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

She is survived by one son, Douglas LesCallett of Murfreesboro.

Cremation services will be held by Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro.

Bernice Hill

AHOSKIE – Bernice Hill, 80, a native of Bertie County, died July 6, 2007 at her residence.

Survivors include one sister;

sister, Eva Evans of Maryland;

and one granddaughter.

Cremation services will be held by Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., nAhoskie.
