Evelyn P. Shackelford

 ASHEBORO – Mrs. Evelyn Parker Shackelford, 86, of 500 Cliff Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at her home.

 A memorial service was conducted Monday, July 9, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro, with Rev. Mike Holder officiating.

Graveside memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, with Rev. Lamar Wheeler officiating.

Mrs. Shackelford was born on August 2, 1920 in Woodland, NC, the daughter of the late John and Lillie Boyce Parker.

She was a hairdresser and a homemaker. She was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church.

She was a beloved mother who enjoyed painting, crocheting, and all crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis D. Shackelford.

 She is survived by her beloved son, Chip Shackelford and daughter-in-law, Angelia Brinn Shackelford, of the home; her extended family in Woodland; and her family in Bath, NC.

 The family will receive friends following the memorial service.

Ben J. Savage

COLERAIN n Ben Junior Savage, 51, a native of Hertford County, died July 9, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, Harrellsville, by the Rev. Robert Lewis. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Savage was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. He was last employed at Smithfield Packing Company, Smithfield, Va.

Survivors include his parents, Charlie Savage and Clara Watford, both of Colerain; a sister, Tiffany Leary of Harrellsville; his sons, Shelton Savage of Seattle, Wash., and Antonio Miller of Greenville; sisters, Cynthia Savage of the home, Sadie Savage of Chesapeake, Va., and Irene Moore of Chesapeake; and one grandchild.

James H. Eason

NORFOLK, Va. – James Henry Eason, 70, a native of Northampton County, died July 6, 2007 at his home.

Eason was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Norfolk, where he served on the Male Usher Board and retired from the civil service after 33 years.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley M. Eason; a sister, Lucy Mae Eason of Temple Hills, Md.; his children, Joyce Chambers, Roosevelt Chambers and Vicky Wilson, all of Norfolk, Pamela Chambers of Petersburg, Va., and Rosalind Logan of Waldorf, Md.; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Union United Church of Christ, Norfolk, by the Rev. Dr. Linda D.T. Clark. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Rhudar Lomax

NORFOLK, Va. – Rhudar Lomax, 92, a native of Rich Square, died July 8, 2007. She was the widow of James Lomax.

Mrs. Lomax was a former housewife and retired as a cook from Taylor’s Nursing Home after 25 years of service. She was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Norfolk and the Senior Citizen’s Association.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church by Pastor Bobby Bowser. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.

Iris P. White

PORTSMOUTH, VA n Iris Pierce White, 67, of Sampson Place, died Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth.

Mrs. White was born in Bertie County, a daughter of the late Richard Norman and Odell Whitley Pierce.

She was a homemaker.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Marshall Ray White; a daughter, Victoria White Connelley of Portsmouth; two sons, Frankie Ray White of Chesapeake and Richard E. White of Portsmouth; two sisters, Mary A Karnes and Rachel P. Mabry, both of Harrellsville, NC; a brother, Thomas G. Pierce of Roxobel, NC; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain, NC, with the Rev. Robert May officiating.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 NC Highway 42 West, Ahoskie, NC, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2007.

Garrett Funeral Home is serving the White family.

Mattie L. Saunders

WILLIAMSTON n Mattie L. Saunders, died July 2, 2007 at Martin General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. William Clark. Burial will be in the Archer family cemetery, Harrellsville.

Survivors include three sisters, Effie Britt Eley of New York, Louise Copeland of Hampton, Va., and Shirley Chavis of Philadelphia, Pa.

Willis Jones

Willis “Pete” Jones, born August 16, 1936 in Winton, NC, passed away March 23, 2007 in Tucson, AZ, after a short illness.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen Jones of Tucson, AZ, daughters, Beverly Spears of Seattle, WA and Joy Anderson of Phoenix, AZ, and son, Victor Jones of Minneapolis, MN. He is also survived by brothers, Arthur Jones Jr. and Joseph Jones; and sisters, Ruth West, Phyllis Johnson, Gayle Starr and Gwen Jagernauth. Also surviving are three stepchildren; and 12 grandchildren.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Glynnis (Brett) Jones and brother, Richard Jones.

A graveside memorial ceremony will be held at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, July 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements by Hertford County Undertakers.
