EDENTON n Annie Virginia Hathway, 88, died June 16, 2007 in Skilled Nursing Care Center, Edenton.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Oxley Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill. A visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m. Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, 706 Ghent St., Windsor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Emmanuel Boone

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Emmanuel Boone, 57, died June 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Northampton West High School, 100 Broughton Street, Gaston, by the Rev. Travis Judkins. ROCKY MOUNT n William D. Nixon, 72, died June 17, 2007 at his residence.

Joseph L. Bush

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n Joseph Louis Bush, 71, a native of Woodland, died June 16, 2007 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Shalom Baptist Church, 1111-24th St., Newport News, by Pastor Derrick Perkins. Interment will be in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Bush was retired from Newport News Shipbuilding. He was a member of Shalom Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Madie L. Bush; his mother, Virginia Dale Bush of Woodland; two daughters, Connie Bush-Adu of Stone Mountain, Ga., and April Cofield of Newport News; five sisters, Ola Mae Bush of Rich Square, Ann Richardson of Woodland, Effie Edwards of Newport News, Bettie Cain of Suffolk and Queen Everette of Hampton; four brothers, Frank W. Bush of Washington, D.C., Paul Bush of Woodland, Silas Bush of Woodland and James M. Bush of Hampton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchildren.

Jesse O. Whitehurst

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Jesse Orlando Whitehurst, a native of Gates, died June 16, 2007.

Whitehurst was a veteran of the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Churchland Baptist Church and retired from civil service as an electronics technician.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Jean Boyd Whitehurst; two daughters, Barbara Strudwick and Carol Howard; a sister, Polly Stevens of Franklin; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Loving Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. No family members will be present. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Churchland Baptist Church with the Rev. Lawrence B. Coleman. Burial will be private; however, friends are encouraged to visit with Betty at Brighton Gardens, 5620 Wesleyan Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23455, any afternoon after the day of the funeral. Ethel H. Newsome

AULANDER nEthel Hardy Newsome, died June 17, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted 12 noon Saturday at Zion Grove Baptist Church, Aulander. Interment will be in the Claudia Ambrose Memorial, Aulander. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, William Newsome of Newport News, Va., and Joseph Newsome of Aulander; two daughters, Cendyrethia Brown and Barbara A. Kerns, both of Aulander; two brothers, Joseph Hardy of Hempstead, NY, and Edward Hardy of Aulander; four sisters, Carlise Taylor of White Plains, Geneva Lewter of Ahoskie, Edith Jenkins and Ruby Robinson, both of Bronx; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Leroy Futrell

AHOSKIE – Leroy Futrell, 78, a native of Hertford County, died June 18, 2007 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Futrell was a member of Newsome Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he was head of the Trustee Board. He was retired from Georgia Pacific as a mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel G. Futrell; two sons, Gilbert Futrell of Ahoskie and Alton Futrell of Suffolk, Va.; six daughters, Alisha Sessoms of Colerain, Louise Lewis of Aulander, Elsie Thomas of Suffolk, Va., Diane Futrell of Greensboro, Judy Pemberton of High Point and Mable Kelly of Murfreesboro; 19 grandchildren, and a host great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Newsome Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Smallwood.

Burial will be in the church cemetery, Ahoskie.

MURFREESBORO n William Deloatch, 69, a native of Southampton County, died June 19, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro.

Survivors include his wife, Bernice Smith Deloatch of Murfreesboro; one son, William Wiggins of Ahoskie; one daughter, Teresa Vaughan of Fayetteville; two stepdaughters, Natasha Smith and Erica Smith, both of Murfreesboro; four brothers, Oliver Artis Sr., and Zeb Artis, both of Norfolk, Va., Robert Artis and John Artis, both of Ahoskie; five sisters, Addie Pope of Murfreesboro, Gloria Ashe of Harrellsville, Nora Mae Artis of Cofield, Otelia A. Perry of Virginia Beach and Annie Barnes of Newsom; and four grandchildren.

Herbert A. Williams

ELIZABETH CITY n Herbert A. Williams, 86, a native of Pasquotank County, died June 18, 2007 at W.R. Winslow Memorial Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Joppa Baptist Church, Hobbsville, by the Rev. William Thorton. Burial will be in the Key’s family cemetery. Viewing will be held on Sunday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Sunbury.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Williams of Elizabeth City; four sons, Perry Williams, and Raymond Williams, both of Virginia Beach, Va., Ronald Williams of Chesapeake and Antonio Williams of Wuerzburg, Germany; three daughters, Villa Tilman, Cathy White and Priscilla Williams, all of Elizabeth City; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Lela H. Boone

MURFREESBORO n Lela H. Boone, 77, a native of Bertie County, died June 19, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Boone family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry L. Boone of Murfreesboro, John G. Boone of Ahoskie and Michael W. Boone of Roanoke Rapids; one daughter, Jeanette Holley of Murfreesboro; two brothers, Henry Hardy of Woodland, and Lionel Hardy of Woodland; two sisters, Francis Jackson of Silver Spring, Md., and Mageline Futrell of Woodland; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Lillie M. Barnes

PORTSMOUTH, Va. n Lillie Mae “Mae Barnes” Barnes, 73, a native of Bertie County, died June 19, 2007 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Monday in Holy Light Church of Deliverance, Portsmouth, Va., by Bishop Samuel L. Carruth. Burial will be in the Wilder’s Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. A visitation will be held at Wilder’s Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday. The body will lie in state at Holy Light Church of Deliverance in Portsmouth on Monday from 11-12 noon. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Holy Light Church of Deliverance.

Survivors include daughters, Rose Mary Vann of Portsmouth and Alice Faye Parker of Anchorage, Alaska; sons, Nathaniel Barnes and Robert Barnes, both of Portsmouth; sisters, Doris Jenkins Thomas of Maryland, Magaline Hardy of Roxobel and Mary Ruth Lee of Aulander; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Bernice S. Hines

RICH SQUARE n Bernice Shearin Hines, 56, a native of Northampton County, died June 16, 2007 at Duke University Hospital, Durham.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by Pastor Arthur Clark. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Hines was a member of St. Matthews Holiness Church and retired as cashier at Oryes, both in Baltimore.

Survivors include a daughter, Sabrina Hines of Rich Square; a son, James A. Hines Jr. of Baltimore; brothers, Fred Shearin and Tony Shearin, both of Rich Square; sisters, Annie Harrell of Paterson, NJ, Annette Jacobs of Como, Alice Shearin, Mary Shearin, Gladys Sexton, all of Rich Square; and three grandchildren.

Raeford Reid Jr.

RICHMOND, Va. n Raeford “Bubble” Reid Jr., 62, a native of Hertford County, died June 17, 2007 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Charlie Carter Jr. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Reid was a graduate of R.L. Vann School and a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and a retired vending machine mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Valentine Reid of Richmond; three daughters, Brenda Hawkins of Philadelphia, PA, Rochelle Reid and Mechelle Reid, both of Richmond; one son, Raeford Reid III of Richmond; brothers, Melvin Reid of Ahoskie, Ernest Falice of Norfolk, Va., Willie Lloyd Reid of Winston-Salem, Terrence Moore, Tyrone Moore and Henry Moore, all of Ahoskie, James Moore of Gates, Raeford Ervin Moore of Newport News, and Damont Moore of Waegan, South Korea; sisters, Carrie Mae Sessoms of Ahoskie, Phyllis Nichols of Norfolk, Patricia Jean Beasley of Petersburg, Kerri Williams of Murfreesboro, Gertrude Mitchell and Shante Jones, both of Ahoskie; and two grandchildren.
