LEWISTON n Rosetta Powell, 57, a native of Bertie County, died June 22, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

She was a nurse/counselor.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Springhill Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Leroy Douglas. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Steve H. Barnes

ROANOKE RAPDIS – Steve H. Barnes, 44, died June 24, 2007.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at the Rowell family cemetery, Pleasant Hill. Hockaday Funeral Home, was in charge.

Matilda Pridgen

ROCKY MOUNT n Matilda Pridgen, 98, died June 24, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at The Scripture Center, Rocky Mount. Interment will be in Gardens of Gethsemane. A visitation will be held from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Beatrice H. Taylor

WHITAKERS n Beatrice H. Taylor, 84, died June 23, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Interment will be in Northeastern Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Louise H. Sumpter

DURHAM n Louise Holley Sumpter, 69, a native of Bertie County, died June 10, 2007 at Duke University Hospital, Durham.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander, by the Rev. W.J. Best Jr. Burial will be in Wilder’s-Cherry Cemetery, Aulander.

Mrs. Sumpter was a member of Ashland Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jerome Sumpter of Hampton, S.C.; sons, Jerome Sumpter Jr. of Brooklyn, NY and Jerry Sumpter of Durham; daughters, Lisa Scott of Hampton, Yunepha “Dee” Sumpter of Brooklyn; Hope Sumpter of Durham and Michelle Lucas of Plymouth; brothers, Woodrow Holly Jr. of Virginia Beach, Raleigh Holley of Colerain, Huther Holley of Virginia, Joe Holley of Windsor and James Holley of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Sadie Craig of Brooklyn and Irene Holley of Houston, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.

RICH SQUARE n Wayne Devone Jacobs, 37, a native of Northampton County, died June 21, 2007 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, New Jersey.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square, by Pastor Fredrick Whitaker. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Jacobs was a driver for A-Plus Medical Co. in Patterson, NJ.

Survivor include his father, Maddry Ruffin; stepfather, John Mason of Paterson; son, Kasheem Windbush and Devon Wayne Townsend, both of Paterson; a daughter, Shaquilla Townsend of Paterson; brothers, Derrick Mason, Darrin Mason, Terry Balmer and Bobby Arnold Jr., all of Paterson; sisters, Cynthia Johnson, Paulette Jacobs, Danielle Carpenter, Sheila Mason and Lisa Ann Mason, all of Paterson; and his godmother, Mildred Balmer.

Bernice Onque

LAUREL, MD n Bernice Lewis “Necie” Onque, 84, a native of Woodland, died September 26, 2005.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Anderson family cemetery, West Persimmon St., Woodland. Burial will be held in Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander.

Mrs. Onque retired after 30 years of service from the administration department of The Pentagon.

Survivors include two sisters, Algray Majette of Ahoskie and Libbia “Pansy” Lewis of San Antonio, Texas.

LEWISTON n Michele Huff Clark, 48, a native of New Jersey and resided in Lewiston, died June 24, 2007 at Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Charity Temple Holiness Church, Aulander, by Bishop James E. Clark Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Clark was a retired nurse’s assistant in New Jersey.

Survivors include her husband, William Frank Clark of Lewiston; sons, Doran Black of New Jersey and Keith Bazemore of Virginia; a daughter, Caprice Black of New Jersey; and brother, Michael Huff of Columbia, SC and William Huff of New Jersey.

Bertha B. Parker

AHOSKIE n Bertha Bunch Parker, 86, a native of Bertie County, died June 23, 2007 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center, Windsor.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. H.H. Murrill. Burial will be in the church cemetery, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Parker was a domestic engineer with the Evans family.

Survivors include a daughter, Anthelia Parker of Mount Rainer, Md.; and a son, Jeffery Parker of Portsmouth, Va.

Joanne McClease

AHOSKIE n Joanne D. McClease, who resided in Windsor, died June 21, 2007, in Chesapeake, Va.

She was a bus driver for the county of Bertie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bazemore Temple, Windsor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

Leth R. Webb

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Leth Rachel Webb, 39, died June 25, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Annie Archer

MURFREESBORO n Annie Susan Lawrence Archer, 92, a native of Hertford County, died June 25, 2007, in her home.

Mrs. Archer worked at various jobs after her children grew up.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, James Herod Archer; daughters, Norma Yvonne Archer Carter of Richmond, VA, and Joyce Ann Archer Turpin of Silver Spring, MD; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robert Richardson.

The family will receive friends at the home. KELFORD n Lontr\u00E9 D’mon “Tr\u00E9-Duce” Askew Sr., 21, a native of Hertford County, died June 24, 2007.

Askew worked in the Sanitation Department at Perdue, Inc., Lewiston.

A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ashland Missionary Baptist Church, Merry Hill, by the Rev. W.J. Best Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

AULANDER n Minerva Majette, died June 27, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Majette was a member of St. John Second Baptist Church.

BROOKLYN, NY n Louise Porter Boone, a native of Harrellsville, died June 27, 2007 at Bishop Musauero Rehab Center, Brooklyn.

Halstead T. Futrell

DECORDOVA, Texas - Halstead Thomas Futrell, 74, CMSGT U.S. Air Force (Ret.), a native of Woodland, died June 23, 2007, in DeCordova. He was the widower of Patricia Sue Futrell.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, David Futrell of DeCordova; three daughters, Jo Ann Brickley of Middlebury, Conn., and Brandy Johnson of Benbrook, Texas, and Patricia Futrell of Herndon, Va.; and four grandchildren.
