WINDSOR – Local N.C. Forest Service officials are not sure what touched off a fire that scorched 75 acres of woods near here Thursday.
According to Bertie County Forest Ranger Mike Hoggard, the fire was contained to an area off U.S. 13 northwest of Bertie County High School.
Hoggard said three dozers from the N.C. Forest offices in Bertie, Hertford and Chowan counties dug low into the mineral soil and created a line around the fire.
He added the fire occurred on land that is managed by Mike Neal and Associates.
The fire also ran onto White and Dunlow property.
It was reported at 6:45 p.m. and located at 7 p.m.
Hoggard said the fire was under control by 11 p.m.
