Wayne Pierce

Wayne Pierce departed this life on Thursday, May 24, 2007. He was born June 8, 1945. He was a graduate of Robert L. Vann High School. Wayne served in the United States Army as a medic. For the later part of his life he lived in Indianapolis, Ind., and Clearwater, Fla., with his sister, Algie Worley.

Survivors are brothers: Walter Pierce and McKinley Pierce of Ahoskie, N.C., Carlton Pierce of Winton, N.C.; and sisters: Josephine Pierce of Ahoskie, N.C., Gerlene Beverly of Philadelphia, Pa., Vernelle Alston of Franklinton, N.C., Lucinda Holloman of Fair Oaks, Calif., Algie Worley of Clearwater, Fla., Janice Jones of Lovettisville, Va., and Alma Wright of Edison, NJ.

Funeral services will be held at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, May 27, 2007 at 2 p.m. Officiating Rev. Paul Moore of New Ahoskie Baptist Church. Viewing will be from 1-2 p.m. Interment Pierce Family Cemetery on Newsome Grove Road.

Melvin E. Pierce

WINDSOR n Melvin Eugene Pierce, 82, a native of Bertie County, died May 23, 2007 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Windsor Assembly of God by the Rev. Chuck Gray and the Rev. Glenn Smith. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery with military honors. Memorial gifts may be made to University Hospital Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Pierce was a former police chief for the Town of Windsor. He served for 30 years and was a World War II Army Veteran and also served in the National Guard. Pierce was a member of Windsor Assembly of God and a former Lion’s Club member.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Johnson Pierce of Windsor; a sister, Delsie P. Hughes of Newport News, Va.; and three brothers, Johnny Pierce and Spencer Pierce, both of Windsor and Donald Pierce of Hampton.

Vicki D. Jessup

ROCKY MOUNT n Vicki D. Jessup, 55, died May 21, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

Shavonna Futrell

CONWAY n Shavonna M. “Bug” Futrell, 34, died May 21, 2007 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zoar Missionary Baptist Church, Pendleton, by the Rev. Denson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hood Funeral Home, Conway, is in charge.

Lettie Stewart

WINDSOR n Lettie Dorothy Stewart, 62, a native of Bertie County, died May 20, 2007 in Philadelphia, Pa.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Bond family cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Davey Hoggard Sr.

COLERAIN n Davey Edward “Kingpin” Hoggard Sr., 81, a native of Bertie County, died May 24, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was the widower of Lena Mae Jernigan Hoggard.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. R.O. Denton Jr. and the Rev. J.R. Thomas. Military rites will be observed. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home and at other times from Mr. Hoggard’s home. Memorial gifts may be made to White Oak Transport Service, Windsor, NC 27983.

Hoggard was a member of Askewville Assembly of God Church and retired from Lea Lumber Company. He served in the Navy during World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Lavern Terry of Aulander and Lena Evans of Colerain; one son, Davey Hoggard Jr. of Colerain; a sister, Emaline Baker of Windsor; two brothers, James “Little Bud” Hoggard of Windsor and Leon Hoggard of Hampton, Va.; a half brother, Sherman Hoggard of Ridesville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Franklin Whitfield

ROCKY MOUNT n Franklin Whitfield, 62, died May 24, 2007.

Kurt E. Nielsen

SUFFOLK, Va. n Kurt E. Nielsen, 51, died May 24, 2007 at his home.

Survivors include his sisters, Ingred Luton of Elizabeth City and Gail N. Bunch of Edenton.

Clemmon Bridgers Sr.

JACKSON – Mr. Clemmon Windfield Bridgers, Sr., age 73 died at the Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids on Friday, May 25, 2007.

Mr. Bridgers was a native of Northampton County where he was a member of the Jackson Baptist Church.

He was married to Barbara Barrow in 1955.

Mr. Bridgers retired as a Soil Technician with the Halifax County Soil and Water Conservation following thirty-eight years of service and dedication.

He was a Master Mason, member of the Seaboard Lodge #378, AF&AM, and a member of the Scottish Rite as well as a Shriner.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Mamie Askew Bridgers and Lewis Clemmon Bridgers and his two sisters, Janie Frances Hoggard and Hollie Futrell Bailey.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Barrow Bridgers of the home, one son, Clemmon Windfield “Win” Bridgers, Jr. and his wife Heidi of Ahoskie, NC.

Surviving also is one grandson Lewis Clemmon Bridgers.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, May 27, 2007 at 2 P.M. at the Jackson Baptist Church in Jackson, NC.

The burial will follow at the Jackson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Jackson Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Saturday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M.
