HOBGOOD – Lawrence Academy claimed the tournament title.

The Lady Warriors’ softball team defeated Hobgood Academy 9-0 in the finals of the Hobgood Easter Tournament.

Junior right-hander Kendall Street led the Warriors to victory from the mound. She struck out 10 batters during seven innings of work and allowed no runs.

Street was also solid at the plate, going 2-for-4 including a three-run homer in the third inning that helped the Warriors plate four runs in that frame.

“Kendall’s homerun kind of opened it up for us,” Lawrence Head Coach Bill Swain said. “She put us ahead 4-0 and that got us going offensively.”

Sophomore Leanne Eubanks was also a leader at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day. Kendra Spruill was 2-for-3 and Sarah Capehart was 2-for-4 for the Warriors. Ashley Swain had the other hit with a 1-for-3 day.

Lawrence scored four runs in each of the third and fifth innings and added one run in the sixth frame to secure the win.

“I think those two games were the best we have hit the ball all season,” Swain said. “We were a little shaky on defense Friday, but we played just about as good as we could on Saturday.”

Swain said he was pleased to win the tournament, but was also pleased just to get his team some work.

“It was nice to win the tournament, but it was a good chance to play,” Swain said. “We had a two-week layoff and that is a might long time to go without playing.”
