AHOSKIE – Wilson’s Beddingfield High School built an 8-1 lead and held off Hertford County to win 10-7 here Wednesday.

The Bruins jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings before HCHS scored in the bottom of the third.

Heath Britt was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an Andre Lyles RBI-single to right to get the Bears within 6-1.

Beddingfield added two runs to take an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth frame where Hertford County scored three runs.

Corey Saunders singled to center and stole second before going to third on a Michael Burton groundout. Saunders then scored on a Britt RBI-single to center.

Britt himself came around to score when Lyles ripped a triple to right. Edward Joyner’s single to center scored Lyles to make it 8-4 after five complete innings.

Beddingfield added another pair of runs to make it 10-4 as the game headed into the bottom of the seventh stanza.

Saunders again got his team going with a single. He went to second on a balk and scored on Burton’s RBI-double to right. Burton went to third and scored on wild pitches before Joyner singled to center and moved to second on another balk.

Dunlow singled to right, plating Joyner, and then moved to third on a David Brackett single to left.

After Latrael Ashe was hit by a pitch to load the bases, the game ended on a groundout.

Burton pitched the entire game suffering the loss.

The Bears had 13 hits led by Dunlow and Joyner who were each 3-for-4. Saunders and Lyles had two hits each.

“We just didn’t come to play today,” HCHS Head Baseball Coach Chris Towell said. “We couldn’t get the key hit when we really needed it.

“On defense, we didn’t make the routine plays and that came back to haunt us,” he added.

Hertford County is 3-7 overall and will play at Currituck Tuesday at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Farmville at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
