HOBGOOD – Robert Kravitz got career win number 50 here Monday.
The Lawrence Academy baseball team, who Kravitz has led to two state championship series appearance in his two-plus years at the school, defeated Hobgood Academy 4-0 to help the coach reach that milestone.
“It was out most impressive outing of the year,” Kravitz said. “Jonathan pitched well and we played outstanding defense behind him.”
The coach said his team turned a pair of double plays and recorded two outs via run downs.
“Offensively, we’re still not hitting with runners in scoring position,” he said. “We have to work on that.”
The Warriors started the scoring in the fourth inning when Gray Harrell singled and went to second on a Judd Whitehead base hit. Jake Mitchell’s groundout sent Harrell to third and the senior then scored when he stole home to give Lawrence a 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Whitehead got the Warriors going with a double. He moved to third on a Daniel Oliver single and scored when J.T. Lilley delivered a single. T.J. Johnston then came through with a two-run double to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead from which they never looked back.
Harrell and Whitehead led the Warriors with each recording a 2-for-4 day at the plate while Johnston was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and Lilley was 1-for-3 with one RBI. Daniel Oliver was 1-for-4.
“Overall, our defense was superb,” Kravitz said. “It was the best defensive game we’ve played since I’ve been here.”
The Warriors improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Tarheel Independent Conference. They will host Halifax Academy in a key non-conference matchup on Friday.
