WINDSOR – Good pitching and good hitting.

The two combined usually make for a victory as they did for the Lady Falcon softball team Tuesday afternoon.

Bertie used a shutout from senior hurler Megan Cowan and 14 hits to defeat Pasquotank 11-0.

The Falcons opened the game with six runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Sophomore Courtney Dunlow walked before Christie Brown had a single to left. Dunlow then scored on Brittany Hoggard’s RBI-single to center and Brown scored on an error on the play. The error also sent Hoggard to third.

Cowan walked and stole second before senior Abby Parker delivered a two-run double to left. Parker scored herself on a Holly Cowand RBI-single. Senior Carla Cooper then plated Cowand when she laced an RBI-double to left and put the Falcons up 6-0.

BHS added a pair of runs in the fourth when Kelly Cummings doubled to center, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch. Jody Mizelle then walked and moved to second on a Dunlow single to right.

Mizelle came around to score when Brown delivered an RBI-single to center giving Bertie an 8-0 advantage

The Lady Falcons scored their final three marks in the bottom of the fifth. Cowand walked to get the rally started and Chelsea Dunlow singled to left. Cowan scored on a Mizelle RBI-single.

After Courtney Dunlow walked to load the bases, Chelsea Dunlow and Mizelle scored on a Brown two-run single that ended the game.

“I am satisfied with the win,” Falcon mentor Jackie Copeland said. “Megan pitched well. Pasquotank’s pitcher was a different speed that we usually see.

“We got key hits with runners on base,” she added. “A win is a win.”

Cowan went the entire five innings, scattering six hits and allowing no runs while striking out six.

Offensively, the Falcons put together 14 hits with Brown leading the way on her 3-for-4 afternoon. Mizelle, Courtney Dunlow and Cowand had two hits each.

The Lady Falcons improved to 8-0 overall with the victory and are 3-0 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

They will meet fellow league co-leader Currituck at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at home.
