Bears take early lead

EDENTON – Hertford County High School got started on the right foot Tuesday.

The Bear baseball team knocked off Edenton in the Northeastern Coastal Conference opener for both schools by a 6-0 count.

Heath Britt threw a complete game, three-hitter to pace the Bears to victory. He struck out 11 Edenton batters along the way.

“Heath gave us a great game on the mound,” HCHS Head Baseball Coach Chris Towell said. “We also got timely hits and played solid defense.”

The Bears plated one run in each of the opening three innings before tallying two marks in the fifth and a security run in the seventh.

Michael Burton, Jacob Dunlow and Edward Joyner were each 2-for-4 for the Bears. Joyner paced the Bears with three RBIs on the evening.

Burton scored two runs while Dunlow added an RBI.

Joseph Westbrook suffered the loss for Edenton despite tossing a complete game and striking out 15.

The Bears improved to 1-3 on the season heading into Wednesday afternoon’s contest at R.L. Fike High School in Wilson. They are 1-0 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference.

HCHS will be back in action Friday when First Flight pays a visit.
