WINDSOR – Despite winning, the Lady Falcons weren’t exactly stellar Thursday.

That changed Friday when Bertie High School’s varsity softball team took a 9-0 victory at SouthWest Edgecombe.

“Within 12 to 24 hours after playing like we did Thursday, we were a different team Friday,” Falcon skipper Jackie Copeland said. “Taking nothing away from Williamston, I wasn’t pleased with our play Thursday. Friday we looked more like Bertie High School.”

Offensively, the Falcons were led by freshman Jody Mizelle and sophomore Courtney Dunlow, each of whom was 3-for-4 on the afternoon.

“Jody is a freshman with the dual role of being our shortstop and our leadoff batter,” Copeland said. “Friday, she really came around on the hitting and that could be big for us as the season progresses.”

Senior Brittany Hoggard was 1-for-2 on the afternoon while classmate Megan Cowan was a perfect 3-for-3.

On the mound, Cowan was “superb,” according to her coach. She went the full seven innings and allowed a single hit while striking out eight and giving up no walks.

Copeland also said she was pleased with the defense of the Lady Falcons, including an over-the-head catch by Hoggard in center field.

“We played much more like I expect us to,” she said.

The Lady Falcons are 5-0 heading into today’s Northeastern Coastal Conference opener at First Flight.
