GARYSBURG – A Garysburg man is facing felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon after a March 3 incident.

According to Northampton County Sheriff’s Office Detective D.M. Harmon, Richard Squire Jr. (aka Copperhead) was arrested Monday and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

The charges stem from a shooting that occurred the previous Saturday evening.

“That night there was a party event at a Garysburg non-profit and, after it had been shut down early due to fighting, it carried over to the projects,” Harmon said. “As a result, shots were fired.”

A male subject was shot twice, once in the right shoulder and once on the left side. He was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

According to Harmon, the victim is listed in stable condition.

After the investigation, Harmon arrested Squire, an 18-year-old from New Jerusalem Lane in Garysburg. His bond was set at $20,000 secured and his first appearance was Thursday.
