Godwin Jones

RICH SQUARE n Godwin Jones, died January 15, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, Roxobel, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in the Moore Cemetery, Rich Square. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Erma Jones of Rich Square; one stepdaughter, Barbara Jean Jones of Roxobel; and two grandchildren.

Janice Jernigan

COLERAIN n Janice “Jackie” Britt Jernigan, 69, a native of Bertie County, died January 23, 2007 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Colerain Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Byrd. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 25 at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and other times from the home. Mrs. Jernigan was a member of Colerain Baptist Church and retired from the N.C. Agriculture Extension Service in Hertford County as the Administrative Secretary.

Survivors include her husband, A.D. Jernigan Jr. of Colerain; two sons, Alpheus Stuart Jernigan of Charlotte and David Neal Jernigan of Colerain; two sisters, Nancy B. Eskew of Texas and Raula Rozov of South Carolina; a brother, Henry Franklin Britt Jr. of Ahoskie; and one grandchild.

Patricia Vinson

WALDORF, MD n Patricia Louvenia Vinson, 51, a native of Northampton County, died January 21, 2007 at Southern Maryland Hospital, Clinton.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Menola First Baptist Church, Woodland. Burial will be in Cladie Ambrose Memorial Gardens, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She retired in 2001 from New York State in Poughkeepsie.

Survivors include her father, Louis Vinson of Rich Square; her stepmother, Jeanette Vinson of Rich Square; daughter, Sambrina Nicole Spier-Vinson of Waldorf; a son, Shamron Wayna Majette of Waldorf; sisters, Jacqueline M. Vinson, Julia Tarpley, Clara Vinson, Marinda Vinson, all of Maryland, Georgia Kay Clanton of Jackson, and Hazel Ruffin of St. John; and two brothers, Louis Burns Vinson of Atlanta, Ga., Georgia Vinson of Poughkeepsie.

Charles L. Grant

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n Charles Lee Grant, 66, a native of Northampton County, died January 21, 2007 at Riverside Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mill Branch Baptist Church, Aulander, by Ministers Elbert Hicks Jr., Larry Lynn and William Lynn. Burial will be in the Wilders-Cherry family cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Grant was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Charlie L. Biggs of Newport News; three daughters, Carolyn Lorraine Smith and Cecilia Grant, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and Stacie Hicks of Ehrick, Va.; a brother, James Grant of Woodland; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Lee A. Grant

CONWAY n Lee Andrew Grant, 62, a native of Northampton County, died January 20, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Mill Branch Baptist Church, Aulander, by Ministers Elbert Hicks Jr., Larry Lynn and William Lynn. Burial will be in Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Grant was employed with Freeman Metal Company, Ahoskie. He was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church Woodland.

Survivors include a son, Jerome Draughn of Como; stepsons, Anthony Ridley of Florida, and Elbert Hicks Jr. of Charlotte; stepdaughters, Shirley Harmon of Franklin, Va., Mary Ann Deans of Raleigh, Bert Rally of Seaboard, Shirley Ann Hicks, Darlene Sexton and Doris Ann Benton, all of Murfreesboro; a brother, James Grant of Woodland; and two grandchildren.

Phyllis P. Davis

EDENTON – Phyllis Perry Davis, 45, of the 200 block of River Road, died Monday, January 22, 2007. Mrs. Davis was the wife of Floyd Davis and the daughter of Mrs. Inez Gray Brown, of Aulander, NC and the late Phillip William Perry, father, and the late Quinton Brown, step father.

Surviving other than her husband include her daughter, Jennifer Allen of Chesapeake, Va.; three sisters, Cindy Adams and her husband, Ricky of Chesapeake, VA, Jackie Simmons and her husband Patrick of Aulander, NC and Shellie Saxby and her husband, Terrence of Murfreesboro, NC; one brother, Pat Perry and wife, Judy of Ahoskie, NC; two step brothers, Philip Perry and Steven Perry, both of Virginia Beach, VA; and one step sister, Janice Perry of Chesapeake, VA, and many nieces and nephews. My mom will always be in my heart, always in my mind and never forgotten.

A Celebration of Mrs. Davis’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2007 with the Rev. John Boswell officiating at Rosewood Memorial Park, 631 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach, VA. Clarence O. Revelle

Clarence Oliver Revelle, died December 16, 2006 in Burlington, Vermont. A native of Conway, NC, he was the son of James Everette and Claire Futrelle Revelle. He graduated from Woodland-Olney High School, Chowan College, and East Carolina University, and served in the U.S. Army.

He was a representative of Boston Mutual European Sales and spent almost forty years of his insurance career in Bitburg, Germany.

Mr. Revelle is survived by his wife, Virginia Berry Revelle of Burlington, Vermont; a son, Joel Winston Revelle, daughter-in-law Isabelle Hindersin Revelle, and grandson, Julian Revelle, all of Leipzig, Germany.

Other survivors include his sister, Nancy Revelle Johnson, Fearrington Village, NC and three brothers, Riddick Revelle, Fayetteville, NC, Bill Revelle, Shiloh, NC and George Revelle, Cary, NC. He was predeceased by one brother, James Everette Revelle, Woodland, NC.

He will be buried in the Ashley’s Grove Church Cemetery, Conway, NC. A memorial service will be held at the church in the spring.

Verlie J. Gay

CONWAY n Verlie Jacobs Gay, 85, a native of Northampton County, died January 22, 2007 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Branches Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. Bobby Warren. Burial will be in the Jacobs family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include two sons, James Gay of Seaboard and David Gay of Conway; two daughters, May Gay and Reaver Thompson, both of Conway; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Louise G. Stewart

WOODLAND n Louise Grant Stewart, 58, a native of Northampton County, died January 18, 2007 at Duke Medical Center, Durham.

Mrs. Grant

was a LPN license from Riverside Hospital School of Nursing in 1972, graduated Cum Laude with Bachelor of Art in Human Development from St. Leo University in 1979, Certification for Alcohol Counselor from Commonwealth of VA, Associate Degree in Nursing from Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Florida, Master of Art in Human Resource Development from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1987, member of Nebo Missionary Baptist Church-counselor for the (ROAD) Reaching Out Against Drugs Program. Awards received were Phi Theta Kappa-National Honor Fraternity, Alpha Beta Gamma, National Business Honor Society of Community and Junior College, Contact Teleministries, Certificate of Recognition from Tydall Air Force Base, recognition for physical and mental health from Ahoskie Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Certificate of Recognition for Family Centered Practice from State of NC Dept. of Human Resource Division of Social Services, Certificate of Achievement in the honor of Outstanding Excellence from CADA. She was a registered nurse at Rivers Correction Center, Winton.

Survivors include her husband, Robert I. Stewart of the home; two sons, Robert Stewart of Dunbar, WVa., and Rodney Stewart of Woodland; two daughters, Robin Lyons of Franklin, Va., and Roslyn Stewart of Woodland; her sisters, Lavern Futrell of Newport News, Mildred Black of Woodland and Marion Grant of Spring Valley; brothers, Elton Bethall of Newport News,

Percell Grant of Hampton, Larry Grant and Tony Grant, both of Newport News; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one step-grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Nebo Missionary Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. W. Robert Ashe Sr. Burial will be in the Wilders-Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. William L. McNair Sr.

ROPER -William Levi McNair Sr., 90, a native of Franklin, Va., died January 23, 2007, in Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation, Hertford. He was the widower of Emily Ruth Watkins McNair.

McNair was a retired carpenter and home improvement specialist, he was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Maryetta Bartram of Roper and Donna L. Hall of Bellville, Mich.; four sons, Billy McNair and Robert E. McNair, both of Roper, Ricky McNair of Franklin and Ronnie McNair of Edenton; 18 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Eure Baptist Church Cemetery, Eure, by the Rev. Wayne Proctor. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, will be in charge.

Ronnie Lancaster

ROCKY MOUNT n Ronnie Lancaster, 53, died January 18, 2007 at Nash General Hospital.

Elizabeth Belfield

RICH SQUARE n Elizabeth Belfield, 94, died January 22, 2007 at Nash Rehab & Nursing Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Branches Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion First Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Branches Chapel Baptist Church. She was finance secretary for 36 years, a Sunday school teacher and president of the choir for 18 years.

Survivors include two sons, Fred Belfield Jr. of Rocky Mount and Louis Belfield of Edenton; one daughter, Jeannette Belfield of Rocky Mount; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Almeter Bennett

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Almeter Knight Bennett, 99, a native of Boston, and spent her earlier years in Corapeake, died January 18, 2007, in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth. She was the widow of Blackwell J. Bennett.

Mrs. Bennett was a member of Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, where she was mother of the church.

Survivors include three daughters, Nevonne Stringfellow, Mildred Payne and Mary Gibson; four sons, Winston L. Bennett, Jackson Bennett, Judge Arthur T. Bennett and Benny F. Bennett; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Henry P. Jones. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Robert T. Rodgers

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Robert T. Rodgers, 64, died January 22, 2007 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A visitation will be held from 11-11:30 a.m. on Saturday with service beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Elizabeth H. Disosway

NEW BERN –

Elizabeth Harrell Disosway, 86, a native of Gates, died January 21, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.She was the widow of John Justice &uot;Jack&uot; Disosway.

Funeral Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday

at Christ Episcopal Church by Rev. Dr. Canon Peter Stube and Rev. Ronnie Lee Eason. Commital services will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern.

Mrs. Disosway was graduated from Gates High School as salutatorian of her class. In 1941, she received AB degrees in English, French and history from East Carolina Teachers College. She did graduate work at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. For many years she taught English and history in the public schools in Weeksville, Angier, Wilson and New Bern.

She was a member of the Retired School Personnel in which she held local, district and state offices. She was a charter member of the national sorority Alpha Delta Kappa-Beta Gamma Chapter and Alpha Fidelis Sigma. She was the leader of the METS at Christ Episcopal Church and also a member of St. Frances Chapter. She was a member of the Golden Age Club and was president of the group from 2000-2001. She was a member of Eastern Star Chapter 129.

Survivors include her son, John Disosway, Jr.

of Louisa, VA; her daughter, Marjorie Disosway Purgason

of Stafford, VA; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 321 Pollock St., New Bern, NC 28560; or to a favorite charity.
