WINDSOR – A Colerain teenager has been arrested and charged with the Jan. 16 armed robbery of a Powellsville convenience store.

Bertie County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Ed Pittman reported that 17-year-old Jashawn Deandre Brown of 114 Pioneer Ave., Colerain was arrested Friday in the Trap community.

Brown stands charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and was placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $75,000 secured bond.

The robbery occurred at approximately 8:39 p.m. on Jan. 16 at the RGS Market #5, located on US 13 North in Powellsville. There, according to information provided by Pittman, three black males entered the market. At least one of the suspects was seen carrying a handgun.

“From the information gathered from witnesses at the scene, we were able to determine that Mr. Brown was the one observed holding a handgun as the three suspects entered the store,” Pittman said.

Pittman added that as the investigation continues and additional information is gained, charges will be brought against the other suspects in this case.

On the night of the robbery, an armed suspect approached the checkout counter where the store’s co-owner was working. The suspect pointed the handgun at the co-owner and demanded money. The co-owner obliged the request.

Pittman said after taking the undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect at the checkout counter pointed his weapon at a second clerk in the store and told that person, “don’t (expletive deleted) move.”

According to Pittman, a second suspect then reached his hand inside a box of cigars located at the checkout counter and removed 35 cigars.

At that time the three suspects left the market. They were last seen on foot heading towards the downtown area of Powellsville.

Pittman said each of the suspects wore a bandana over the bottom of their faces and a do-rag on top of their heads.

Those with information concerning the other suspects involved in the RGS Market #5 robbery are urged to contact the Bertie Sheriff’s Office at 794-5330.
