COLERAIN – One arrest has been made in connection with last week’s armed robbery at White’s Cross Grocery on Wakelon Road.

Katina Yvonne Watford, 27, of Colerain was arrested Friday by Bertie Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Ed Pittman.

While Pittman said that Watford was not inside the store at the time of the robbery, she was charged with aiding and abetting an armed robbery.

Watford was placed under a $5,000 secured bond and made her first court appearance yesterday (Wednesday). Her probable cause hearing has been set for Feb. 7.

Pittman said he continues to seek information that will lead him to the two men involved in the actual robbery.

Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins reported last week that two black males entered the store at approximately 7 p.m. on Jan. 3. Both were wearing dark clothing, hooded jackets and scarves covering the top portion of their faces.

The Sheriff said one of the suspects was carrying a long-barreled weapon while the other was seen with a handgun.

Two customers and two clerks were in the store at the time of the robbery. Pittman said the suspects, upon entering the store, ordered all but one clerk to lie on the floor. At that time, the suspect carrying the handgun placed a bag on the checkout counter and ordered the clerk to place cash in the bag and then lie on the floor.

After the money was placed in the bag, the two suspects left the store. No shots were fired and no injuries were reported.

Pittman urged anyone with information concerning this case to call the Bertie Sheriff’s Office at 332-5330.
