ROCKY MOUNT n Ethel M. Lucas Bryant, 95, died December 16, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Metropolitan Baptist Church. Interment will be in Unity Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. prior to the service. A public viewing will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. Thursday at H.D. Vance O. Davis

ROCKY MOUNT n Vance O. “Zeke” Davis, 80, died December 16, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Morning Star Church of Christ. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Barry Horton

GREENVILLE n Retired Master Sergeant Barry Horton, 44, a native of Hertford County, died December 16, 2006 in Winton.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Windsor. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state at 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Horton was a ROTC training officer at East Carolina University.

He is survived his parents, the Rev. Robert L. Horton and Susie Hoggard Horton.

Emma Ballance

WILLIAMSTON n Emma Speller Ballance, 80, a native of Bertie County, died December 15, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Francis Baptist Church, Windsor. Burial will be in the Outlaw family cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Ballance was a retired employee with the town of Williamston.

Mary Hofler

GATESVILLE n Mary Catherine Dildy Hofler, 102, died December 16, 2006 at Down East Health & Rehab Center, Gatesville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Piney Grove Baptist Church, Gates. Burial will be in the Dildy family cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include three daughters, Myrtle V. Johnson of Virginia Beach, Va., Clarine Riddick of Norfolk and Joyce Hamilton of Durham; one son, Willis R. Hofler of Tucson, AZ; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

GOLDSBORO n Romie Faison, 91, formerly of Rocky Mount, died December 18, 2006 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro.

Daisy Pittman

ENFIELD n Daisy Pittman, 97, died December 16, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Springfield Baptist Church in Littleton, by the Rev. John Rooks. Interment will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home Chapel, Roanoke Rapids.

Lettie Futrell

CONWAY n Lettie Martin Futrell, 94, a native of Northampton County, died December 18, 2006. She was the widow of John Sullivan Futrell.

Mrs. Futrell was a member of Creeksville Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Creeksville Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Harris. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Creeksville Baptist Church. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Survivors include her sons, Wayne Futrell of Murfreesboro, John S. Futrell of Woodland and Robert E. Futrell of Carmichael, Calif.; her sisters, Bennie Jean Britt of Conway and Clarine Barnes of Severn; her brother, Grady Lee Martin of Milwaukee; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

James Smith Sr.

GATESVILLE n James Smith Sr., 91, a native of Hertford County, died December 17, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Blanchard Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Sunbury, by Bishop Robert Knight. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Smith was a retired truck driver for Wrenn Logging Co. in Franklin, Va. He was a deacon at Blanchard Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Myrick Smith of Gatesville; a son, James Smith Jr. of Gates; daughters, Nancy Riddick, Lucille Boyce and Avis Smith, all of Gates; sisters, Marie Arrington of Suffolk, Va., and Mary Grinage of Waterbury, CT; a brother, John Smith of New York; 29 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Joseph D. Bowser

WINTON n Joseph D. Bowser, 25, a native of Hertford County, died December 16, 2006 at Duke Health Raleigh Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jordan Grove Baptist Church, Winton, by the Rev. James Shearn. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his father, Joe Bowser Jr.; one brother, Trenton Perry; one sister, Jameera Perry; and his grandmothers, Ernestine Flood and Etta Griffin Ward, all of Winton.

George Duncan

MURFREESBORO n George Truett Duncan, 81, a native of Farmville, died December 19, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Meherrin Baptist Church by the Rev. David Foster. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall after the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Meherrin Baptist Church for Youth Activities. Duncan was an Air Force Veteran of World War II. He was an active member of Meherrin Baptist Church and a mason.

Survivors include his brother, Conwell S. Duncan of Seaboard; and a sister, Helen Duncan Orrell of Chesapeake, Va.

Claude Newell

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Claude Newell, 76, died December 20, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Scotland Neck.

Carl R. Dunning

FALLON, Nev. n Carl Reynolds Dunning, a native of Aulander, died December 9, 2006.

A celebration of life service with military honors was held Wednesday, December 13 at The Gardens Chapel. Donations may be made in Carl’s memory to the Angel Kiss Foundation (for children who have cancer) 150 Ridge St., Reno, Nev. 89501. The Gardens Funeral Home, Crematory and Cemetery, was in charge.

Dunning after graduating from school in Aulander, joined the Air Force, a career that lasted for 20 years. After moving to Fallon, he worked as an electrician for Lockheed Martin for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Dunning; a son, Richard Dunning of Minden; a daughter, Debra Newman of Sparks; brothers, Bill Dunning of Delaware, Ronald Dunning of North Carolina and Richard Dunning of Idaho; sisters, Urcel Pierce, Nancy Acree and Becky DeCoste; all of North Carolina; and five grandchildren.

Adron B. Jones Jr.

Adron Beecher Jones, Jr. (73) of Winton, NC departed this life on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie, NC. He was born on March 6, 1933 to Carrie Avery Jones and the late Adron B. Jones, Sr. in Augusta, Ga.

He was a member of Philippi Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from ECSU where he was student class president.

He was Veteran of US Army Paratroopers.

Adron was Principle at CS Brown School for over 15 years.

He was in the Masonic Lodge Hertford Ashley #63, an Omega Psi Phi, American Legion Post 102, National Teacher Association, AARP, Audio Visual Director for Hertford County Schools, Member of Elk’s Shriners and an Eastern Star.

He leaves to cherish his memories:

his mother, Carrie Avery Jones of Winton, NC;

(1) daughter, Jan Carrie Jones of Silver Springs, MD;

(1) son, Jay Yancy Jones of Winton, NC;

(3) grandchildren;

a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2006 @ 1:00 PM at Philippi Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. William Lassiter.

Burial will be Private. Family will accept friends at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, December 22, 2006 from 6 pm n 8 pm.
