Post-season awards continue to come Tydreke Powell’s way; however the biggest was announced on Wednesday as the 6’-3”, 293-pound defensive tackle from Hertford County High School was named to the prestigious All-USA Today 2006 High School Football Second Team.

Powell is one of four North Carolinians to be named to the top 44 players listed by the nationwide newspaper.

Texas led the way with six selections, followed by California and Florida with five each. Durham Hillside’s Greg Little was the only First Team selection from the Tar Heel state, while Anson County’s Trinton Sturdivant and High Point Andrews’ defensive back Marcus Gilchrist joined Powell on the Second Team.

This is the first ever selection to USA Today’s Annual Team for a player from the Roanoke-Chowan area.

The 2006 All-USA football teams were selected by USA TODAY’S Chris Lawlor, who consulted with a national network of analysts, coaches and sportswriters.

This honor joins several other awards for Powell following his outstanding 2006 campaign that resulted in 114 tackles, 13 sacks and four touchdowns.

He was recently named to the NC Preps.com All-State team, NC Preps 3A All State Team, First Media’s All-Talkin’ Sports Team, Northeastern Coastal Conference Player of the Year and to the North Carolina Team for the 70th Annual Carolina Shrine Bowl.

Powell is one of the top recruits in the country that is still uncommitted. He is currently considering North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Penn State and Florida State.
