Barbara Glover-Jonkers
ELOORD HOLLAND, Netherlands – Barbara Ann Todd Glover-Jonkers, 65, a native of Bertie County, and formerly of Lewiston, died December 3, 2006 at her residence.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. William L. Davis Jr. Burial will be in the Outlaw family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.
Mrs. Jonkers was a retired science teacher from New York School System and a private tutor in Alexandria, Va., and Portugal. She was also the author of a children’s book “How Do I Make Letters?”
Survivors include her mother, Queen Ester Lee Todd of Lewiston; sisters, Marian Todd Skinner of Lewiston, Debbie Todd Mitchell of Las Vegas, NV, and Katrina Todd McDuffie of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and a brother, William Whitman Todd of Mitchellville, Md.
Arilee Grant
AHOSKIE n Arilee Grant, died December 7, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee Grant of Ahoskie; three daughters, Brenda Jenkins, and Betty J. Valentine, both of Ahoskie and Lassie Marie Williams of Paterson, NJ; one sister, Annie Newsome of Bronx, NY; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Cofield Hill
WINDSOR n Cofield Hill, 82, died December 6, 2006 at Three Rivers Health and Rehabilitation Center, Windsor.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor. A visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will be in the Hill family cemetery.
Walter Tayloe Jr.
WINDSOR n Walter Sidney Tayloe Jr., 76, a native of Powellsville, died December 8, 2006.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 am. Monday at Cashie Baptist Church by the Rev. Jack Byrd and the Rev. Carroll Tarkington. A private burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from their home at 101 W. Watson Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Cashie Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 221 South Queen St., Windsor, NC 27983. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.
Tayloe started his banking career in 1955 in Ahoskie, with Planters National Bank and retired as president of Yadkin Valley Bank in Elkin. He also served in the US Army for four years.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Byrd Tayloe; two sons, Walter Sidney Tayloe III of Elkin and Michael Goodwin Tayloe of Divide, CO; one daughter, Martha Kipper Caton of Apex; one sister, Penny Tayloe Thompson of Windsor; one brother, Robert “Bob” Tayloe of Wilmington; and five grandchildren.
Bobby Barnes
ROCKY MOUNT n Bobby Earl Barnes, 55, died December 6, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Faith Tabernacle Holiness Church. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.
Odessa Gordon
ELIZABETH CITY – Odessa Marie Banks Gordon,80, died December 5, 2006.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, Elizabeth City, by Dr. Roosevelt Askew and Bishop L. Lee Gordon. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Stallings Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is in charge.
Survivors include six daughters, Beulah G. Skinner of Camden, NJ, Evang. Celestine Smith, Easter G. Dunton, Eudora G. Morning, Vanessa G. Green, all of Elizabeth and Helen V. Gordon of Red Springs; five sons, Bishop James E. Gordon of Woodbridge, Va., Bishop L. Lee Gordon Sr. of Winfall, Elder George K. Gordon Sr., Dennis L. Gordon, Michael A. Gordon, all of Elizabeth City; four sisters, Ethel Riddick and Laura Harris, both of Southampton, NY, Lucille Banks of Allentown, Pa., and Mary Roach of Riverhead; two brothers, Williams Banks and George Banks Jr., both of Southampton; 54 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Ruben M. Beamon
SUNBURY n Ruben MacNeil Beamon, 59, died November 26, 2006 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church, Sunbury, by the Rev. Samuel L. Buck Jr. Burial will be in Gatling Road Cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Olivia Evans Beamon of the home; one daughter, SPC Dynisha B. Murry of Fayetteville; two sons, Gerald M. Beamon of Baltimore, Md., and Irving Beamon of Greenville; four sisters, Maggie Beamon and Cynthia Holloman, both of Sunbury, Viola B. Cannon of Greenville and Loretta Henry of Teaneck, NJ; three brothers, Donell Beamon of Chesapeake, Va., Charles Beamon of Sunbury and Nathaniel Beamon of Ahoskie; and four grandchildren.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. n Dorothy Hall Brown, 63, died December 3, 2006 at Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.
A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miracle of Faith Praise Worship Center, Drum Hill. Burial will be in the Hall family cemetery, Gates. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
Derek Sessoms
AHOSKIE n Derek Sessoms, died November 30, 2006, at his residence.
A funeral was conducted Monday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Powell. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, was in charge.
Sessoms was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, Braxton Sessoms of Hopewell, Va.; one daughter, Tereka Sessoms of Atlanta, Ga.; his father, Lester Sessoms of Ahoskie; and one brother, Earl Gaskins Jr. of Winton.
Frank S. Taylor
EDENTON n Frank Shelton Taylor, 82, a native of Hertford County, died December 7, 2006 at Chowan Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Rocky Hock Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. James Horton assisted by the Revs. Ralph Harrell and Raymond White. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Rd., Edenton, NC and all other times at the residence. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be directed to the building fund of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, 113 Rocky Hock Church Road, Edenton, NC 27932.
Taylor retired from Byrum Hardware Company. He was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and the Carey Evans Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Harrell Taylor; two daughters, Carol Haste Cozart of Mocksville and Shelia H. Schultheiss of Edenton; two sisters, Louise Taylor of Harrellsville and Lina Evans of Suffolk, Va.; one brother, Wallace Taylor of Colerain; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
John S. Lawrence Jr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. – John Southall Lawrence Jr., known as &uot;Shane,&uot; was born in Como, N.C., July 13, 1954.
Lawrence was the owner-operator of Lawrence Hauling L.L.C., a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a minister. He was a member of Joynes Road Church of God, Hampton. Survivors include his wife, Chenell Parker Lawrence; two daughters, Katascha Lawrence of Portsmouth and Nicole Lawrence of Marietta, Ga.; one son, John Southall Lawrence III; mother, Mary Louise Lawrence; father, John Southall Lawrence Sr.; five sisters, Betty J. Sinclair and Christine Johnson, both of Chesapeake, Brenda Hall and Thelma Barham, both of Franklin and Gail Griffith of Gates; and three grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Joynes Road Church of God, Hampton by the Rev. Dennis Kidd. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is in charge.
