WINTON – At a special called meeting on November 16, the Hertford County Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Dr. Michael Basham as its new superintendent of schools.
Dr. Basham retired in Virginia in June, 2005.
He has over 21 years of experience as a school superintendent in both Virginia and South Carolina.
Prior to his retirement he served for over eight years as superintendent of the Wise County Public Schools in Virginia.
He also has served as superintendent of the Fort Mill Public Schools in South Carolina and the Scott County and Lunenburg County Public Schools in Virginia.
David Shields, Board Chair, stated that Hertford County is fortunate to be able to attract a new superintendent with the wealth of experience that Dr. Basham possesses.
The Board voted to hire Dr. Basham because of his extensive experience and his success in helping raise the academic achievement of the students in the Wise County Public School System and the other school systems he has led.
Of the candidates interviewed, Dr. Basham was the most experienced.
“The Board is looking forward to working with Dr. Basham, the staff of Hertford County Public Schools, the students, the parents and the public to move our school system forward,” stated Shields.
Dr. Basham has been invited to attend the November 27 board of education meeting to meet the staff and to outline his plan for success for Hertford County Public Schools.
A Meet the Superintendent reception is being planned for a later date.
