Flossie Ricks

CONWAY n Flossie Sumner Ricks, 86, died Monday, October 30, at Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley in Rich Square. She had been preceded in death by her husband, Gilmer Burton Ricks and by a sister, Emma Alice Sumner Martin.

A native of Northampton County, she was a homemaker and a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great, great grandmother, and she was a member of Conway Baptist Church.

Her survivors include a son, Norman Burton Ricks and wife, Josephine of Conway; three grandchildren, Mark Ricks and fianc\u00E9e, Cathy Bradshaw and Anthony Ricks and wife, Vera, of Conway and Norma Jo R. Drewette and husband, Robert “Bobby” of Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Jason Ricks and wife, Karen of Jackson, Jamie Ricks of Murfreesboro, and Mindy Jo Drewette of Jackson; and one great, great-grandchild, Sarah Kate Ricks of Jackson.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. in the Town of Conway Cemetery with Rev. Willie McLawhorn officiating. A memorial service honoring Mrs. Ricks will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Conway Baptist Church with Revs. Willie McLawhorn and James Hester officiating. The family received friends in the church social hall after the memorial service and at other times in their home.

Anyone wishing to share a memorial gift may do so to Conway Baptist Church.

Mary Odom

ROCKY MOUNT n Mary Lee Lynch Odom, 60, died October 27, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

Charles Showers Sr.

AULANDER n Charles Olen “Chuck or Pappy” Shower Sr., 65, a native of Simpson County, Miss., died October 30, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mill Branch Baptist Church, Aulander, by Dr. Stevie Lawrence. Burial will be in Mt. Herman Baptist Church Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Showers was a licensed electrician. He was a member of New Life Ministry, Cofield and retired electrician from Perdue, Lewiston.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Greer Showers of the home; his mother, Mary Bailey Showers of Mississippi; children, Renee Brunson of Richmond, Va., Charles Showers Jr. of Dover, DE, Cara Showers and Stephanie Lawrence, both of Winston-Salem and Daryll Showers of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Hazel Powe of Clinton, Joyce Bradshaw of Brooklyn, NY, Lena Showers of New York and Mary Louise Adams of Megee; brothers, Charlie Showers of Brooklyn and Johnnie Showers of Mendenhall; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

L. Burney Rice

RALEIGH – Lester Burney Rice, 97, formerly of Ahoskie, N.C., died at Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center Raleigh, N.C., on Tuesday, October 31, 2006.

Mr. Rice was born in Northampton County in 1909, and was the son of the late John T. and Lavinia B. Rice of Conway, N.C. He was married to Nancy Tadlock Rice for 69 years, who preceded him in death in October 2005. Burney and his wife lived in Ahoskie for 65 years. He was an active member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church, a long time member of the Ahoskie Kiwanis Club and a member of the Woodmen of the World.

Burney graduated from Conway High School and attended North Carolina State University. In 1936 Burney began working for Basnight and Garrett Furniture Company,

where he was employed for well over 20 years. In 1974 when Burney retired he was employed with the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

He is survived by a daughter; Patsy R. Overton and husband, Charles of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Margaret O. Spears and husband, Raymond of Benson, N.C. and Kathryn O. Wright and husband Bob of Garner, N.C.; and three great-grandchildren, Amanda Spears, Bradley Wright, and Blair Cheryl Wright.

A funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, November 3, at Garrett Funeral Home, 205 N. C. Highway 42 West Ahoskie, N.C. with Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating . Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Highway 13, South, Ahoskie, N.C.

His daughter, Patsy, wishes to express her sincere gratitude and appreciation to the nurses, doctors and CNA’S of Rex Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center of Raleigh for the care and kindness they gave Mr. Rice while in their facility.

He was a loving and devoted father, father-in-law, a friend to many, and

a kind, patient and generous PaPa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed.

Marlene Dilday

AHOSKIE n Marlene Ann Phillips Dilday, age 38, died Oct. 28, 2006.

Marlene was born Aug. 1968 in Syracuse, New York. She recently had worked at ACE Hardware in Ahoskie, NC. Marlene was a hard worker who loved her plants and flowers and gave 110% to every task she attempted. Marlene’s life was her two sons, Matthew and Shawn. They were always first in her life. She was predeceased by her beloved grandfather Wayne Crawford Phillips.

Survivors include her husband, Horace Dilday Jr.; her sons, Matthew Scott Young Jr. and Shawn Crawford Young; her daughters, Sandra Pierce, Donna Adams, Rhonda Davis, and Kristina Dilday; her mother, Sharon Delaney and her husband Richard of Nashville, Tenn.; her father, William Phillips Sr. and his wife June of Lawrenceville, VA; her paternal grandmother, Dawn Stalker and her husband Claire of Central Square, NY; her sisters, Marcia Phillips of Greenbriar, Ark., Erin Delaney of Centerville, Tenn., Lucinda Merritt of South Hill, Va.; her brothers, Paul Phillips and his wife Kris of Ashland City, Tenn., William Phillips Jr. and his wife Cathy of Lyles, Tenn., Richard J. Delaney III and his wife Jennifer of Fairview, Tenn., Edward Merritt and his wife Bettie Jo of

Richmond, Va., Brett Delaney of Lyles, Tenn., and Jason Phillips of Lawrenceville, Va.; eight grandchildren; and 20 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, Nov. 2, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating. Burial will take place later in New York.

COLUMBUS, Ohio n Michael Orlando Farmer, 46, died October 29, 2006 at his residence.

WELDON n Eddie Clay, 80, died October 29, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
