WINTON – Winton Police Chief David Griffith has been placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina SBI investigates an allegation of rape against the law enforcement officer.
According to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan, his office was notified on the morning of Oct. 28 concerning an alleged rape.
“We received a call from Roanoke-Chowan Hospital regarding a teenage girl who said she had been raped,” Vaughan said. “Upon interviewing the young lady, she accused Chief Griffith of the crime.”
Vaughan said it was standard procedure to call in the SBI to investigate allegations made against a law enforcement officer.
The Sheriff went on to say that the SBI is continuing its investigation.
“No charges have been filed and no arrest has been made,” Vaughan said.
Winton Town Manager Joe Futrell confirmed that Griffith had been placed on administrative leave with pay.
