Willie W. Freeman

HOBBSVILLE – Willie W. &uot;Boss&uot; Freeman, 103, died August 27, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Gatesville. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Effie O. Miller

NORFOLK, Va. – Effie Outlaw Miller, 92, a native of Colerain, died August 28, 2006. She was the widow of Roosevelt Miller.

Mrs. Miller was a self-employed beautician. She had been retired for 15 years after 60 years of service. She was a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, Norfolk

Survivors include a son, Lamott Harris of Norfolk; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, 1141 Campostella Road, Norfolk, by Dr. Ronnie D. Joyner. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.

Leander Jefferson

RICH SQUARE n Leander Jefferson, 105, a native of Northampton County, died August 26, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. He was the widower of Addie Anderson Jefferson.

Jefferson was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Survivors include Rosa Jefferson of Rich Square, Retha Redden of Newport News, Va., Essie McKnight of Temple Hills, Md., James Jefferson “J” and Bernice Rollings both of Dover, DE, and Clarice Stevenson of Ardmore, OK, 26 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 31 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, by Pastor Dorothy E. Ruffin. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hood Funeral Home, Conway, is in charge. A viewing will be conducted from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Barbara Eason, 405 Drew Ave., Rich Square.

James Ryan Jr.

WINDSOR n James Madison Ryan Jr., 85, a native of Bertie County, died August 30, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Tabernacle Pillar of Fire by Pastor Alice Baylor. Burial will be in the Ryan family cemetery, Windsor. Cherry’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Ryan was a farmer.

Helen Perry

EDENTON — Helen McMullan Swanner Perry, 82, a native of Chowan County, died August 17, 2006 in the Skilled Nursing Unit of Chowan Hospital.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Edenton Baptist Church by Dr. Jesse J. Croom and Dr. Kenneth Word. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Evans Funeral and Cremations are in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Edenton Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 S. Granville St., Edenton, NC 27932.

Mrs. Perry was a member of Edenton Baptist Church and retired as a medical assistant at Chowan Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph Eugene “Gene” Perry; a son, Carroll McCoy Perry of Edenton; a daughter, Gloria Jean Perry of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Rebecca Swanner Wheeler of Edenton; a brother, Ernest Morgan Swanner of Edenton; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Lee J. Pugh

BROOKLYN, NY n Lee J. Pugh, 74, died August 29, 2006 in Brooklyn.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Cedar Landing Baptist Church, Windsor. A visitation will be conducted from 7-8 p.m. Sunday at Gilliam Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Major Bazemore

AHOSKIE n Mr. Major Franklin Bazemore, age 93, of Ahoskie, NC, died Thursday, August 31, 2006 at his home.

Mr. Bazemore was born Nov. 9, 1912 in Lewiston, NC, the son of the late Frank and Maude Bazemore. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his children, Lillian Weaver of Ahoskie, NC, Elizabeth Williams of Pink Hill, NC and Shelby Bazemore of Ahoskie; his brothers and sister, Cecil Bazemore, Herman Bazemore, Lloyd Bazemore and Mabel Bazemore; four grandchildren, David Williams Jr., April Williams, Tracy Geis and Brian Weaver; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC with the Rev. Jimmy Ward officiating.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Friday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.

James Chavis

AHOSKIE n James Chavis, 80, a native of Hertford County, died August 31, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include three sisters, Ava Hall of Ahoskie, Jean Sullivan of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Goldie Archer of Philadelphia.

WOODLAND n Mary Gwendolyn Eason, died August 31, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, by Minister John T. Grant. Burial will be in Jerusalem Memorial Gardens. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.
