Marie A. Hodges

WILLIAMSTON n Marie Andrews Hodges, 88, a native of Pitt County, died August 12, 2006 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Barnabas Baptist Church, Williamston, by the Rev. Kenneth Matthews. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at 12 noon in the fellowship hall of the church. A wake will be held at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Hodges was a homemaker.

James W. Futrell

CAPRON, Va. – James Wilson Futrell, 85, a native of Potecasi, died August 13, 2006, at his residence. He was the widower of Virginia Fuller Futrell.

Futrell was an Army veteran of the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Survivors include his son, J. Wilson Futrell Jr. of Chesapeake; and one brother, Milton T. Futrell.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery, Boykins. Memorials may be made to Courtland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 439, Courtland, VA 23837.

Rhoda Regina Utt

GATESVILLE – Rhoda Regina Utt, 55, of the 400 block of Court St., Gatesville, NC, died Thursday, August 10, 2006, in Duke Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

A native of Millville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Oscar S. and Ruth Johnson Lorow. Mrs. Utt had worked for Harrell Medical Transport in Gatesville and as a clerk for Country Corner in Sunbury and Gates County Farm Service in Gatesville. She was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church and the Gates County Rescue Squad.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis E. Utt; one daughter, Cheri Utt Pierce and her husband David of Eure; one son, Thomas E. Utt and his wife Melinda of Gates; six sisters, Vera &uot;Sis&uot; Gresh, Florence Betz and Dolly Brehm of Exchange, Pa., Alice &uot;Peachie&uot; Huntington of Bloomsburg, Pa., Eva Yocum of Muncy, Pa., and Patsy Karns of Millville; two brothers, Lee Lorow of Muncy Valley, Pa., and Kenny Lorow of Bloomsburg, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Brittnay Pippin, Summer Pierce and Dylan Utt.

A brother, Oscar S. Lorow predeceased Mrs. Utt.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 13, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. in Gatesville Baptist Church. Burial will be held Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at 3 p.m. in the Ikelers Cemetery in Millville, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Gatesville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 167, Gatesville, NC 27938 or Gates County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 256, Sunbury, NC 27979.

Virginia Reid

WILSON n Virginia Artis Reid, 90, died August 11, 2006 at Wilson Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Jackson Chapel First Baptist Church, Wilson. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to: www.hdpopefuneralhome.com.

Jahson T. Avent

ROCKY MOUNT n Jahson Terrell Avent, infant, died August 8, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

William N. Harris Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – William N. Harris Sr., 84, a native of Seaboard, died August 11, 2006, in his home.

Harris retired as a mechanic for Norfolk Naval Air Station. He was a member of Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth, where he was a deacon and a member of the Sunday school. He was also a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Marion L. Harris; three daughters, Pearlie H. Carrington, Joyce H. Coker and Marion J. Smith, all of Portsmouth; a son, William N. Harris Jr. of Portsmouth; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fourth Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Charles W. Beamon. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, with military honors. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.

James C. Williams III

FRANKLIN, Va. –

James Charles &uot;Jim&uot; Williams III, 68, a native of Roanoke Rapids, died August 10, 2006, at Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Williams was a graduate of Fork Union Military Academy and Chowan College. He was a retired sales representative for Rand McNally Map Services, Eastern Division, a former representative in the fine paper sales department of Union Camp Corporation, former owner of Big Jim’s Peanut Company and was a former National Guardsman. He was a member and former deacon and Sunday school teacher at Sedley Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Pate Williams; two daughters, Lisa W. Hagerty of Powhatan and Susan W. Osborne of Midlothian; one son, James C. &uot;Jay&uot; Williams IV of New Bern; one brother, Edgar Davis Williams of Waleska, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Wright Funeral Home by the Rev. Armand Jalbert and the Rev. John Tadlock. Burial was in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to American Cancer Society, c/o June S. Cooley, 112 Sunset Drive, Franklin, VA 23851, or Sedley Baptist Church, 17494 Johnson’s Mill Road, Sedley, VA 23898.

Lorrine Gavin

COFIELD n Lorrine Gavin, 68, a native of Manchester, Jamaica, died August 9, 2006 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Shirley Johnson. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Sean McCoy of Toronto, Canada; a daughter, Trudy McCoy of Yonkers, New York; four brothers, Nedrick Gavin of Kentucky, Aliki Gavin and Orel Gavin, both of Jamaica and Hulbert Gavin of Toronto; six sisters, Norma Bennett of Vancover, Victoria Richardson of Jamaica, Winsome Powell, Geneva Edmeade, Ayacanora Brynes and Eulie Westcarr, all of Florida; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Juanita Powell

CONWAY n Juanita Powell, 68, a native of Northampton County, died August 13, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Paul L. Anderson.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Powell Jones of Raleigh; her mother, Hazel Stephenson of Conway; one brother, Marvin Stephenson Jr. of East Orange, NJ; and six sisters, Mary Battle of Hackensack, Marva Gadson of Englewood, Vivian Harris of Huber Heights, Ohio, Barbara Stephenson of Conway, Joyce Stephenson of Rahway and Brenda Stephenson of Roanoke Rapids.

James E. Flood

WINTON n James E. Flood, 70, a native of Hertford County, died August 14, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Winton by the Rev. Vernon Watford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitations will be on Tuesday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel for family and friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

Survivors include his wife, Hilma Flood of Winton; one brother, Dr. Dudley E. Flood of Raleigh; and three sisters, Minnie Flood Reynolds of Winton, Nancy Flood of Ahoskie and Josephine Whiting of Richmond, Va.
