WINTON – Two local men face a combined 12 felony charges following their arrest for breaking and entering.
Winton Police Chief David Griffith reported that Curtis Sherrod, 37, of Gatesville and Da’Quon Powell, 21, of Powellsville stand charged with three counts each of breaking and entering plus three counts each of larceny after breaking and entering.
Both men were placed in the Hertford County Jail, each under a $150,000 secured bond.
“From the information I’ve pieced together, Mr. Sherrod was hired to help the victim in this case do some renovation work to two homes the victim owned in Winton,” Griffith said. “Apparently, the crimes occurred when the homeowner was away on vacation.”
According to Griffith, that vacation time was earlier this month.
“The homeowner noticed numerous items were missing when he returned from vacation on Aug. 15,” the Winton Chief said.
Griffith added that the two homes were broken into on three separate occasions.
Reported missing were hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, generators, small appliances, a ladder and a 20-ton jack, among other items.
“I was tipped off about the two suspects when they apparently attempted to sell the stolen items at various locations in Hertford County and Bertie County,” Griffith said.
The majority of the items have been recovered, according to Griffith.
He added that other charges are pending.
Griffith thanked Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan and HCSO Captain Tim Lassiter for their assistance in the case.
The Chief also urged Winton residence to inform the local police department concerning vacations.
“To help protect your property, we’ll check it out daily while you are away,” Griffith said. “But we have to know when you’re planning your vacation. Just call us (358-1033) or come by the police department and we’ll put your name on our list.”
