West pounds Jackets

ROANOKE RAPIDS-Northampton-West ran for 458 yards as the Hurricanes blew through the Roanoke Rapids defense for a 44-14 win here last night.
West started slow, finally crossing into Roanoke Rapids territory on their third possession of the first quarter.
Following a 15-yard penalty on the Hurricanes, Dasmine Moody danced along the left sideline for 32 yards.
Todd Squire added a 24 yard run to put West on the 17-yard line.
After an eight yard gain by Devin Williams, Moody rushed nine yards for the score with no time remaining on the clock.
The two-point conversion gave the Hurricanes an 8-0 lead.
Capping a nine play series, Roanoke Rapids quarterback Trase Jones completed a 16-yard pass to put the Yellow Jackets on the board.
The extra point kick sailed through the uprights, cutting West’s lead to one, 8-7.
Moody’s 14-yard return set the Hurricanes up on their own 29 yard line.
After several small gains, Randy Turner broke through the defensive line, sprinting up the sideline for a 64 yard gain.
Three plays later Michael Peebles ran in the one-yard score.
The conversion pass was good, extending West’s lead, 16-7 at the half.
On their first possession of the second half, Roanoke Rapids turned the ball over on downs on West’s 41 yard line.
Four plays later Squire ran 27 yards up the middle for the West touchdown.
The extra point failed, but the Hurricanes held a 22-7 lead.
The Yellow Jackets answered, scoring on their next possession.
They were helped by 34 penalty yards assessed to the Hurricanes on the series, including a taunting call when the Jackets were inside the 10-yard line.
The extra point cut the West lead, 22-14.
It took West 23 seconds to find the end zone again.
Chris Smith had a 29-yard return, followed by a 36 yard run by Moody for the score.
A penalty pushed the Hurricanes back to the 18-yard line for the extra point but Turner’s pass to Corey Bynum was good, extending West’s advantage, 30-14.
West found the end zone twice more in the fourth quarter.
Moody had a six-yard run and Antonio Manley ran eight yards for the score.
Their second extra point attempt failed, but it didn’t affect the outcome as West won, 44-14.
West had 527 yards of total offense.
Moody led the team with 137 yards and three touchdowns.
Williams ran for 101 yards while Squire had 96 and a touchdown.
West did not complete a pass in the victory.
The Hurricanes won despite being assessed 15 penalties for 144 yards. Roanoke Rapids had 40 penalty yards.
