James F. Baker

GATES – James Fager &uot;Jimmy&uot; Baker, 67, a native of Newport News, Va., died July 23, 2006, in Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Suffolk

Baker was retired from International Paper in Franklin and was a member of Savage’s United Methodist Church. He had served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Ora Leigh Mathias Baker; two daughters, Allison Baker and Dianne Newman, both of Williamsburg; three sons, Chris Baker of Williamsburg, Dean Wilkins and Mark Wilkins, both of Gates; two sisters, Virginia Kelly of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Shirley Curtis of Gloucester, Va.; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday in Parker’s United Methodist Church Cemetery, Corapeake, by the Rev. Mike Askew. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Marion B. Godwin

SUFFOLK, Va. – Marion B. Godwin, a native of Corapeake, died July 22, 2006, in her residence. She was the widow of Lafayette M. Godwin.

Mrs. Godwin worked at various medical facilities and in 1967 became the first African-American school nurse for Isle of Wight County. She worked for Lipton Tea Company and retired in 1989. She was a charter member of Omega Chapter, Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc., serving on both regional and local committees including but not limited to regional chairperson of the Unsung Heros Award; dean of Pledges Philacter, historian, reporter, vice-president and president. She was an active member of East End Baptist Church for more than 50 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Sonya J. Godwin-Johnson of Stafford, Va.; four sons, Delano E. Johnson of Norfolk, Bert V. Johnson, Christopher M. Johnson of Suffolk and Ronald I. Godwin of Portsmouth; her mother, Nellie Cooper Brown of Suffolk; one brother, Owen LeAnder Brown of Houston, Texas; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in East End Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark A. Croston Sr., D.D. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Lena J. Jernigan

AHOSKIE n Lena Joyner Jernigan, 95, of West Hayes Street, died Monday, July 24, 2006, in Henrico Doctor’s Hospital, Richmond, VA.

Mrs. Jernigan was born in Northampton County, a daughter of the late Harvey and Margaret Blowe Joyner.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and had retired as a chief supervisor with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph.

Lena is survived by a son, Troy J. (T. J.) Jernigan and his wife, Jo Ann of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Michael T. Jernigan and Cathy Ramsey, both of Richmond; and great grandchildren, Amber and Joanna Atkinson of Richmond.

She was predeceased by her husband, Troy S. Jernigan.

A celebration of her life memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Billy Presley officiating.

Interment will at 1:30 p.m. in Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and other times at Mrs. Jernigan’s home. Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Ahoskie, P.O. Box 649, Ahoskie, NC, 27910.

Hazel B. Smith

WILSON n Hazel Boyd Smith, 88, a native of Northampton County, died July 23, 2006 at Avant\u00E9 of Wilson nursing home.

A graveside service was conducted Wednesday at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Robbie Parker. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie where in the past she had been active in the Women’s Ministry Union.

Survivors include her daughter, Denise S. Rountree of Greenville; her son, Godwin Dale Smith of Franklinton; and three grandchildren.

Eunice B. Boyce

EDENTON n Eunice Baines Boyce, 94, a native of Gates County, died July 24, 2006 at Britthaven of Edenton. She was the widow of Herman David Boyce.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, by the Rev. Dr. Jesse Croom. Burial will be in Warwick Baptist Church Cemetery, Hobbsville. Memorial contributions may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville St., Edenton, NC 27932.

Mrs. Boyce was a homemaker and had worked at the former Birdsong Peanut Company in Suffolk, Va. She was a member of Warwick Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Boyce Parrish; Edenton; two sons, Edward Lee Boyce of Chesapeake and Roger Thomas Boyce of Franklin; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Charlie L. Lyons

DURHAM n Charlie Lester Lyons, 80, formerly of Lewiston, died July 23, 2006 at his residence. He was the widower of Julia Bohannon Lyons.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor,

by the Rev. Robert Walton. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Woodville Plains Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston. Burial will be in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, Scotland Neck. The family will be receiving friends at 230 Connaritsa Rd., Lewiston. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Lyons was a retired birddog trainer and machine welder.

Survivors include five daughters and one adopted granddaughter, Rachel Fowler, Shirley Lyons, Marie Lyons, Alice Lyons-Bennett, Jackie White and Minnie Lyons-Carter; two sisters, Sally Baker and Eva Hanes; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Annie Sessoms

COLERAIN n Annie Ruth Cherry Sessoms, died July 23, 2006 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Roundtree Temple of Praise, Powellsville, by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in the Jordan Cherry family cemetery in Bertie County. A viewing for the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie.

Mrs. Sessoms was a member of St. Mark.

Survivors include four daughters, Jeanette Doe of Savannah, Ga., Lucresa Fleming and Annie C. Rowe, both of Colerain and Shirley B. Sessoms of Fayetteville; two brothers, Foy Cherry of Ossining, NY and Sherman Cherry of Atlanta; one sister, Shirley Johnson of Ossining; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Rev. W.D. Vick

TARBORO – Rev. Wiley Daniel Vick, 85, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, July 26.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM., Saturday, at Living Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church, Rocky Mount, with Rev. Chris Thompson, Rev. Danny Harris, Rev. Raymond Potter, Rev. Jessie Blalock & Andy Dail officiating. Burial will follow in Edgecombe Memorial Park.

Rev. Vick served the Pentecostal Holiness faith for more than 55 years. As pastor, he led churches in Nash, Halifax, Pamlico, Beaufort, Wayne, Johnston, Robeson, Pitt, Hertford, Wilson and Martin counties throughout his career.

He was preceded in death by a son, Phillip Vick.

Survivors: wife of 55 years, Lillie Parker Vick; daughters, Marilyn Dunning & husband, Ronald n Aulander, Annette Mayo & husband, Charles n Falkland, Janie Dail & husband, Andy n Tarboro; son,

Capitolar Harrell

KELFORD — Capitolar Wynn Harrell, 87, a native of Martin County, died July 26, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Wilson Harrell.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery by the Rev. Chris Lee and the Rev. Doug Sivey. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor and other times at the home of Wendell and Susan Harrell, 1222 Wayland Street, Windsor.

Mrs. Harrell was a member of Kelford Baptist Church and retired from Golden Peanuts as an inspector.

Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte H. Eubanks of Windsor; a son, Wendell Harrell of Windsor; and four grandchildren.
