Abraham Smith Jr.

GATESVILLE – Abraham Smith, Jr., 71, a native of Gates, died July 10, 2006 at Tar River Manor Nursing Home, Greenville.

Smith was a member of Walton’s Grove AME Zion Church, Hobbsville, where he was a Steward, Class Leader and on the Senior Usher Board.

He was a bulldozer operator for Todd Lewis.

Survivors include his wife, Gracie S. Smith of the home; three sons, Anthony Smith of Conn., Roger Smith of Gatesville and Corey L. Smith of Gates; three daughters, Melissa Kirkland and Terry Jordan, both of Gatesville and Jessica Everett of Ahoskie; three brothers, Delton Colfax of Gatesville, Alvin Smith of Sunbury and William Henry Smith of NY; two sisters, Joyce Eason of Gatesville and Vernice Wooten of Georgia; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Walton’s Grove AME Zion Church, Hobbsville.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie is in charge.

Catherine Brown

AULANDER n Catherine Ann Brown, 47, a native of Chowan County, died July 7, 2006 at Norfolk Sentara Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Charity Temple Ministry Church, Aulander, by Bishop James Clark Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Charity Temple Ministry Church, choir director and Missionary Leader.

Survivors include her husband, Anthony E. Brown Sr. of Aulander; her parents, George and Argladys Roulhac of Merry Hill; sons, Toron D. Brown of Edenton, Kentre M. Brown and Anthony E. Brown Jr., both of Aulander; brothers, Johnnie Roulhac of Plymouth, James Roulhac of Maryland, Peter Roulhac of Jamesville, Ned Roulhac of Merry Hill, Ronnie Roulhac of Virginia Beach, Va., and George Roulhac of Norfolk; and sisters, Beulah Roulhac of Merry Hill and Gladys Faye Davis of Sterling.

Judith Chappell

Judith Brown Chappell, died July 10, 2006 at Heritage Hospital in Tarboro, NC. Mrs. Chappell, age 89, resided at the Fountains of the Albemarle in Tarboro during the years of her declining health, but her heart was always in Rich Square, where she was born and reared, attended school, raised her family, and cared for her parents.

Mrs. Chappell graduated from Rich Square High School and attended Woman’s College (UNC-Greensboro). She was a career employee of Roanoke Electric Membership Corporation in Rich Square, where she served as secretary to the director. She retired in 1978.

Mrs. Chappell’s survivors include her son, Dr. Vernon Glenn Chappell, Jr., and his wife, June of Fuquay-Varina, NC, and Hartsville, SC; as well as their children, Christopher and his wife, Marilyn, of Holly Springs, Kimberly and her husband, William Gilliam of Apex; Valerie and her husband, Brendan Medlin of Fuquay-Varina, and Melissa of Boston, Mass.; her daughter, Judith C. and her husband, James F. Bradley, Jr. of Wilson,

and their daughter, Jamie, of Brooklyn, NY; her daughter, Brenda Clifton of Hertford, and children, Dr. Robert Louis Hollowell, III, and his wife, Dr. Stephanie Hollowell of Richmond, VA, and Brandon Cely Hollowell of Raleigh. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chappell is also survived by her brother, Dr. Jere C. Brown of Jersey City, NJ; and her sister-in-law, Forrestine S. Brown of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Chappell was predeceased by her husband, Vernon Glenn Chappell, Sr., her parents, William Clifton and Myrtle Brown; her sister, Sarah Edith Brown Burden; her brother, Robert Wilson Brown; and her infant brother, W.C. Brown.

She was a member of the Rich Square Baptist Church, the Rich Square Garden Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Chappell was forever loyal to her family, taking great pride in their artistic and educational accomplishments. She cherished the joys of nature’s beauty and its seasons. She enjoyed people of all diversities, and was beloved by many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 13, 2006 at Rich Square Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarlawn Cemetery in Rich Square.

Sykes Funeral Services in Rich Square is handling the arrangements, where the family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, 2006.

Flowers are welcomed. Memorial contributions also may be made to Rich Square Baptist Church or to the beautification of the Terrace gardens at The Albemarle, 200 Trade Street, Tarboro, NC 27886.

Lonnie F. Gower

RALEIGH n Lonnie F. Gower, age 92, died July 10, 2006, a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. He retired as a carpenter from Dorothea Dix Hospital in 1978. Lonnie was a charter member of Athens Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Davidson of Aulander and Ruth Chosy of Fuquay-Varina; nieces and nephews including Judy and Melvin Cullipher of Aulander, who gave him four years of care, in their home.

A funeral will be at Athens Drive Baptist Church, 1601 Athens Dr., Raleigh on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Athens Drive Baptist Church, 1601 Athens Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, Raleigh, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mable Tyson

PORTSMOUTH, Va. n Mable Marie Tyson, died July 11, 2006 at Beverly Manor of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Philippi Baptist Church, Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

ROCKY MOUNT n Emmanuel Linwood “Manny” Harris, 16, died July 8, 2006 at Rocky Mount.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at Rocky Mount Evangelistic Center. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home.
