WINDSOR – Old faces in new places is apparently what will be witnessed in principal’s offices throughout the Bertie County Public School system for the 2006-07 academic year.
Bertie High School will have not one, but two principals when school opens late next month. Both are familiar faces.
Sharon Bond, who served as principal this past year at the now closed Askewville Elementary School, will be the on-site administrator at the high school for grades 11-12.
Bond is also a former principal of West Bertie Elementary School and has worked in the BCPS Central Office where she was director of the Reading First Program
Meanwhile, a former Bertie High head football coach is back in the county on a full-time basis. Bill Hawkins, who led the Falcons on the gridiron as well as serving as Athletic Director from 1987-89, will provide administrative leadership for grades 9-10 at the high school.
Hawkins has also served as an elementary school principal in the Emporia, Va. school district and as a head football coach at Forbush, West Henderson and SouthWest Edgecombe high schools. He returned to Bertie County this past school year where he worked with the Exceptional Student Services program.
C.G. White Middle School will also see a familiar face in the principal’s office. Wayne Mayo, who previously served as the C.G. White principal before taking on the same role last year at Bertie High School, will return to the Powellsville-based middle school for the start of the 06-07 year.
However, change is not on the menu at all BCPS schools.
Nancy Wilson (Aulander Elementary), Fannie Williams (Colerain Elementary), Orlando Dobbin (Windsor Elementary) and Elaine White (Serendipity) will remain as the principals at their respective schools.
West Bertie Elementary School will have a new principal for 2006-07. However, the Central Office has yet to announce who will fill that position.
For the final half of the 2005-06 school year, Roy Cherry served as interim principal at West Bertie. He retired at the end of the school year.
Shelton Bond also retired at the end of the 2005-06 academic year. Bond served as principal at J.P. Law Elementary School, which joined Askewville Elementary on the closure list.
