John E. Layton

EDENTON – John Elbert Layton, 48, died June 20, 2006, in Chowan Hospital.

Layton was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church.

Survivors include three brothers, Raymond H. Layton Jr. of Edenton, Dennis E. Layton of Ahoskie and Brent Layton of Edenton.

Adul Nishid

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. n Adul Manny Nishid, formerly of Rocky Mount, died June 18, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Foster Memorial Baptist Church, Rocky Mount. Burial was in Gardens of Gethsemane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, was in charge.

Fannie N. Evans

SUFFOLK, Va. – Fannie N. Evans, 86, died June 21, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in New Middle Swamp Baptist Church. Peebles Funeral Home is in charge.

Thomas A. Picott

SUFFOLK, Va. – Thomas A. Picott, died June 18, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Mount Sinai Baptist Church. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, Franklin, is in charge.

Lillian H. Cram

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Lillian Hawkins Cram, 83, a native of Roanoke Rapids, June 21, 2006, at Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.

Mrs. Cram was a data processing supervisor for Colonial Stores.

Survivors include her husband, Harvey Cram; her sons, Larry Dorsey of Dover, N.H., Douglas Dorsey of Yorktown and Tommy Dorsey of Pasadena, Texas; her stepson, Bill Cram of Calafaun, N.J.; her stepdaughter, Elaine Cram of Raway, N.J.; her brothers, Russell Hawkins of Portsmouth and Paul Hawkins of Gaston; five grandchildren, Christopher Dorsey, Cristania Dorsey, Kathie Dorsey, Douglas Dorsey Jr. and Tyler Dorsey; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held Monday at noon in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Gerald S. Vintinner. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Friends will be received Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 6329 Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513. Michael M. White

DURHAM n Michael M. White, a native of Hertford County, died June 23, 2006 at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill.

Erma Hoggard

AULANDER n Mrs. Erma Lee Williams Hoggard, age 85, of Aulander, NC, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital in Windsor, NC.

Mrs. Hoggard was born July 10, 1920, the daughter of the late Joseph “Billy” Williams and Amelia Mae Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Bruce Hoggard. She was a member of Connaritsa Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, James Bruce Hoggard Jr. and his wife Donna of Dudley, NC. Two grandchildren, Tammy Cartagena and her husband Wilson of Dudley, NC and Gary Hoggard and his wife Judy of Pikeville, NC. Four grandchildren, Maria Cartagena, Chris Cartagena, Casey Sasser, and Wyatt Hoggard. One great-grandchild, Austin Cartagena. Also several nieces, nephews and two sister-in-laws.

Graveside services will be held Monday, June 26, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC with the Rev. Charles Thompson officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.

Mary U. Bazemore

LEWISTON – Mary Urquhart “Aunt Haley” Bazemore, 108, a native of Bertie County, died June 23, 2006 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Weeping Mary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Cofield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include her sons, King Bazemore and James Bazemore, both of Yonkers, NY, Joseph Bazemore and Gene Bazemore, both of Lewiston, Cleveland Bazemore of Windsor and Franklin Roosevelt Bazemore of Upper Marlboro, MD; one daughter, Adelia Hardy of Lewiston; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren.
