PHILADELPHIA, Pa. n Kenana J. Mack, 31, formerly of Battleboro, died June 9, 2006 in Philadelphia.
A visitation was held from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gardens of Gethsemane located in Rocky Mount.
Merlin Hill Jr.
HALIFAX n Merlin Hill Jr., 69, died June 18, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
A visitation will be conducted from 5-7 p.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Roanoke Rapids of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel by the Rev. Willie Peterson. Interment will be in Allen Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Halifax. James Gardner
WINDSOR n James “Jay” Thomas Gardner, 83, a native of Martin County, died June 20, 2006 at Martin General Hospital.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. J.N. Baggett and the Rev. Jimmy Cox. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Walker Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Gardner was a retired farmer with Gillam Farms. He attended Siloam Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Barnes Gardner of Windsor; a son, Donald Gardner of Bethel; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Nannie O. Barnes
EAST ORANGE, NJ n Nannie Ozella Barnes, 78, a native of Hertford County, died June 16, 2006 in East Orange.
A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at First Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Richardson. Burial will be in the Barnes family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
She is survived by one sister, Foy Jones of East Orange.
Carolyn Eure
GATESVILLE n Carolyn Brinkley Eure, 89, a native of Colerain, died June 19, 2006 at Laurel Crest Retirement Center, West Columbia, S.C. She was the widow of Tazewell D. Eure Jr.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial will be in Gatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7-8 p.m. Friday in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Memorial contributions may be made to Laurel Crest, 100 Joseph Walker Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169 or to Eure Christian Church, Hwy. 137, Eure, NC 27935.
Mrs. Eure taught at the former Gatesville High School. She was a member of Eure Christian Church, she taught an adult Sunday school class.
Survivors include a son, Tazewell D. Eure Jr. of Columbia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Mattie DeShay, 60, died June 18, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
