Margaret Ballard

WINDSOR n Margaret Aline Hedrick Ballard, 86, died May 28, 2006. She was the widow of R. Raymond Ballard.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. Jack Byrd. Burial will be at 4 p.m. at Anson Memorial Park, 1704 Morven Road, Wadesboro. Memorial gifts may be made to Bertie County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983.

Mrs. Ballard retired from Nationwide Insurance and was a member of Cashie Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Margaret B. Attkinson of Windsor; a son, Robert Eugene Ballard of Pinehurst; a sister, Frances Hart of Burlington; and grandchildren.

Garnet W. Wheeler

WILLIAMSTON n Garnet Stancell Wheeler, 84, a native of Northampton County, and formerly of Ahoskie (Union), died May 28, 2006, in Martin General Hospital.

Mrs. Wheeler was a member of Union Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Walter Thomas Wheeler of Williamston; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A celebration of her life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Thomas Hayes, Rev. Curtis Pixler, Rev. Marty Dupree and Angela Dupree.

Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Martha D. Copeland

Martha Durfey Copeland, passed with her devoted family by her side on Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Martha was born July 7, 1927 in Williamston, NC, to James and Sarah Cowles Durfey, and grew up in the small Hertford County town of Cofield.

She attended Ahoskie High School in Ahoskie, NC.

She later worked many years for the US Postal Service in Cofield and Halifax, NC.

Martha was an avid historian and genealogist and served as President of the Halifax chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), and was active in the Halifax Co. Historical Society.

She loved the water and coast of NC, and many of her happiest years were spent at her beach home in Salter Path, NC, with her devoted husband Worth Hart, who recently preceded her in death. She is survived by sons, Lee D. Copeland and wife Dee, and James A. Copeland and wife Betsy; daughters, Kate C. Dilday and husband Vann, and Sarah C. Strickland and husband Larry; grandchildren, Jason and wife Mary Beth, Anne Leigh, Garrett, Blake, Paige, Chelsea, Lindsey, Dylan, Josh, Barbara and husband Jeff; great-grandchildren, Jonah, Ivy, Charlie and Lainie.

Our beloved “Mimi” was the guiding light of our family and was truly loved, and admired by us all.

She leaves us with cherished memories, and the hope that our family can remain as strong, loyal and devoted to each other as she was to us.

God bless and keep you till we are all together again.

Carrington E. “Shorty” Baker

AULANDER n Carrington Earl “Shorty” Baker, 77, of the 600 block of Carroll St., died suddenly on Monday, May 29, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC.

At the time of his death, he was surrounded by all members of his immediate family.

Mr. Baker, son of the late Maylon and Gladys Baker, was a native of Hertford County.

He graduated from Ahoskie High School and Wake Forest University and served in the

U. S. Marine Corps for two years.

“Shorty” was a farmer and a local businessman in Aulander for many years.

He was a former member of Connaritsa Baptist Church where he served in many roles and was presently a member of Aulander Baptist Church where he served as deacon and church clerk.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jane Jernigan Baker; daughters, Peggy Cayton and husband, Carl of Ahoskie, Holley Drew and husband, David of Aulander; a son Garry Baker and wife, Amy of Aulander; and grandchildren, Chad Cayton, Garrett Baker, Dustin Baker, Kristen Cayton, Bryan Drew and Brittany Drew.

Besides his parents, Mr. Baker was preceded in death by a brother, Maylon S. Baker, Jr.

A celebration of his life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2006, at Aulander Baptist Church.

The family will receive visitors at the Baker residence at 606 Carroll St., Aulander, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Aulander Baptist Church Youth Fund, P.O. Box 220, Aulander, NC, 27805, or to Aulander Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 249, Aulander, NC, 27805.

Jarvis Vaughan

PENDLETON n Jarvis Vaughan, died May 27, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Harold Sidbury. Burial will be in First Baptist Seven Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Janett Walker of Conway; one sister, Bernice Parker of Seaboard,; and one brother, Johnnie Vaughan of Trenton, NJ.

Lorraine A. Jones

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Lorraine Askew Jones, a native of Ahoskie, died May 27, 2006.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Barbara King

Norfolk, VA – Mrs. Barbara Allen Cullifer King, age 71 died at her home in Norfolk, VA on Saturday, May 27, 2006.

Mrs. King was a native of Bertie County.

She moved to Norfolk at a very young age where she and her family made their home.

Later in life she moved back to Roxobel for a period of about ten years.

She became very active in the Sandy Run Baptist Church, becoming a member of the church, the Sunday school and the choir.

She also was an EMT in the community.

Mrs. King lived her life for her family.

Preceding her in death are her mother and father, Olive Sarah Allen and Robert G. Cullifer, Sr., her daughter, Susan M. King and her son, Donald R. King, Jr.

Survivors include her husband, Donald R. King, Sr. of the home, two sons, Michael E. King of Norfolk, VA and Mitchell A. R. King and his wife Rhonda of Suffolk, VA, one sister, Janet C. Boschen and her husband Rev. Henry Boschen of Roxobel, NC and one brother, Robert Glenn Cullifer and his wife Margaret of Surf City, NC.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jerome D. King, Jason D. King, Justin M. King and Jesse B. King, as well as one great grandchild.

Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 11 A.M. at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel, NC with the Rev. Henry Boschen officiating.

The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Monday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Sandy Run Baptist Church, Roxobel, NC

Earl Woodruff

JACKSON n Earl Woodruff, 66, died May 25, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the J.W. Faison Memorial Chapel, Seaboard, by the Rev. Carroll R. Dickens. Faison Funeral Home, Inc., Seaboard, is in charge.
