WINTON – An elected official in Hertford County faces criminal charges.
Winton Mayor Calvin S. Hall was arrested shortly before midnight on Sunday May 13th by Lt. Marty Davis and Sgt. Will Liverman of the Hertford County Sheriff’s office.
Hall stands charged him with several offenses including intimidating a witness.
Mayor Hall was arrested without incident at his home and transported to the Hertford County Jail where he was placed under a $65,000 secured bond.
Along with the charge of intimidating a witness, Hall was also charged with solicitation to commit a felony, extortion, obstructing justice and violating an order of the court.
Hall was in court on Tuesday May 16th for his first court appearance. He later posted bond and was released. He is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on May 23rd.
Sheriff Juan Vaughan explained that the arrest of Hall was pursuant to an investigation done by his office concerning the relationship between Hall and a Colerain woman.
&uot;Mr. Hall was under a court order to not have any contact with this citizen,&uot; Vaughan said.
The court order was in regards to an assault on the female victim.
&uot;We have evidence that Mr. Hall had been communicating with her on the telephone among other things,&uot; Vaughan said &uot;By doing so he violated the condition of his bond. The other charges all stem from our investigation into the violation of the court order imposed on Mr. Hall.&uot;
Winton Town Manager Joseph Futrell had no comment when asked whether or not Hall’s legal issues would affect his standing as Mayor.
