Edgar G. Brett

CONWAY n Edgar Gary “E.G.” Brett, 82, died Sunday, May 14, at Guardian Care in Scotland Neck.

A native of Hertford County, he, along with his wife, owned and managed Bretts Motel in Murfreesboro and had, previously, owned and managed a Service Station for the Humble Oil Company. He was, proudly, a United States Army Veteran of World War II serving as a Surgical Technician in the 189th Station Hospital in Guam and, then, served a second tour of duty in the Korean Conflict. He was, actively, involved in community service and local government in Franklin, VA and Murfreesboro where he volunteered in their Rescue Squads for a total of 34 years, and he was a member of Murfreesboro United Methodist Church.

His survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Hardy Brett of their home in Conway; one son, Gary Hardy Brett and his wife, Kimberly Brett of Conway; two daughters, Rebecca Ann Brett and Marcie Brett Parker and her husband, Chris A. Parker of Conway; four grandchildren, Heather Katherine Brett, Melanie Christiane Brett, Anna Elizabeth Parker, and Samuel Christopher Parker; one brother, Allie Brett; and one sister, Ida Brunell.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, 2 p.m. in Murfreesboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hagerty officiating and guests attending may visit with the family in the church social hall following the service.

The family received friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and have requested that anyone wishing to share a memorial gift may do so to the Murfreesboro Rescue Squad.

Florence Printis

ROCKY MOUNT n Florence Printis, 57, died May 15, 2006 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

James Penwell

EDENTON n James Robert Penwell, 78, a native of Bertie County, died May 15, 2006. He was the widower of Pola Reed Penwell.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, by the Rev. Greg Brinson. Burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

Penwell was a body shop foreman for Albemarle Motor Co. and had also served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a past member of both the VFW and American Legion Post 40. He was a member of Albemarle Baptist Church, Edenton.

Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia P. Powell of Aulander and Kathleen H. Elmore of Edenton; a stepdaughter, Jacque Headen of White Plains, MD; a brother, Mack Penwell of Aberdeen; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Roberta McIntyre

NORFOLK, Va. – Roberta McIntyre, 75, a native of Hertford County, died May 13, 2006 at Leigh Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. McIntyre was a member Philippi Baptist Church.

Survivors include four brothers, John Moore of Norfolk, Melvin Moore and Allen Eley, all of Cofield and Herbert Moore of Phoenix, AZ;

and three sisters, Dorothy Boone of Suffolk, Jean Jernigan and Beatrice Gatling, both of Winton.

A funeral will be conducted Friday by Minister Linda Moore at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie.

Burial will be at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery.

Harvey Crocker

WOODLAND – Harvey Crocker, 73, a native of Northampton County, died May 14, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Crocker was a member of Severn First Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Jones and Jacqueline E. Crocker, both of Chesapeake, VA;

three brothers, James Crocker of Baltimore, MD, Fred Crocker of Portsmouth and Wardell Crocker of Bronx, NY; and five sisters, Annie Crocker and Lena Joyner, both of Pendleton, Wilhelmenia Crocker of Bronx, Thelma Everette of Woodland and Georgia Twine of Murfreesboro.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Severn First Baptist Church by Rev. Elisha Barnes.

Burial will be in church cemetery.

Lila B. Parker

MURFREESBORO n Mrs. Lila Brown Parker, age 75, of Benthall Bridge Road, Murfreesboro, died May 15, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Parker was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late Talbert and Susan Brown. She was also preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Wayne Parker. She was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church and a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Loyd Alton Parker. Her children, Wanda Elaine Parker Vinson and her husband, W.C. of Murfreesboro, Timothy “Timmy” James Parker and his wife, Lynn of Franklin, Va., Nicholas Dane Parker of Murfreesboro and Marlene Loraine Parker and her husband, Tim Askew of Ashboro, NC. Her sisters, Geraldine Downs of Cofield, NC, Margaret Jones of Lexington, South Carolina; brothers, James Brown of Virginia Beach, Va., and John Brown of South Carolina; five grandchildren, James Kenneth Ayers and his wife, Sonya, Shawn Parker and his wife, Kelly, Justin Parker, Jacob Parker, and Brian Parker. Five great-grandchildren, Ethan Ayers, Joshua Ayers, Tiffany Jernigan, Kato Parker and Movada Parker. Also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church with the Rev. Wint Hale officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

The family received friends at home.

J.C. Holloman, Sr.

POWELLSVILLE – Joseph Cling, “J.C.” Holloman, Sr., 90, of

400 Block of Bethlehem Church Rd., died May 12, 2006, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Mr. Holloman was born September 20, 1915 in Powellsville, N.C., the son of the late Cling and Essie Conner Holloman and was a graduate of Powellsville High School, attended Wake Forest University, and Campbell College.

Mr. Holloman grew up on his parent’s family farm in Powellsville, and after completing his education he worked with Swift & Company in Norfolk, Va. After World War II, he returned home and married Lillian Earl Mizelle and they opened the Office Supply Store in Ahoskie, N.C. They later sold the business and J.C. began selling insurance for Mutual/United of Omaha Insurance Companies from which he retired.

J.C. served in the U. S. Army during World War II, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he received Infantryman badge Ex 30 Caliber Rifle. He also served in Ardennes Rhineland; Central Europe, and receive the American Theater Service Metal; EAME Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Medal; and World War II Victory Medal.

Upon retirement he returned to the family farm and enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Lillian Earl Holloman; one daughter, Julie Holloman Terry and husband, Garry; one sister; Faye Hoggard of Chesapeake, Va. Besides his parents Mr. Holloman was predeceased by a son, Joseph Cling “Jay” Holloman, Jr., a daughter, Vicky Holloman, one sister Elma Pierce, and a brother Bruce Holloman.

Lois M. Hardy

PENDLETON n Lois M. Hardy, 80, a native of Pendleton, died May 15, 2006at Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley.

Survivors include one son, William Douglas Wood Jr. of Murfreesboro; one brother, Albert Ridley; three sisters, Irene Ridley-Barnes, Geneva Edwards and Claudie Mae Gatling; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in First Baptist Church Severn. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Doyle A. Rawls

WOODLAND – Mr. Doyle Allison Rawls, age 72, died at the Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie on Tuesday, May 16, 2006.

Mr. Rawls was a native of Hertford County.

He was married to Betty Jo Edwards in 1955 and they had two children.

Mr. Rawls served his country as a Marine during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of Menola Baptist Church.

Mr. Rawls retired from the Gates Correctional Facility after serving thirty-two years of dedicated service.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Vara Myers Rawls and Lloyd Lee Rawls, Sr., and two brothers, Lloyd Rawls, Jr. and Dan Rawls.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Rawls of the home, one daughter, Penny Allen and her husband Sidney Allen, Jr. of Conway, NC, one son, Joe Rawls and his wife Vickie of Woodland, NC, one sister, Betty Terry of Woodstock, GA, three brothers, William Rawls and his wife Myrtle of Aulander, NC, Melva Rawls and his wife Florence of Bloomsburg, PA and Jimmy Rawls of Aulander, NC. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Joe Rawls, Jr., Travis Rawls, Holley Allen, Will Allen, Jessica Lewis and Jason Harrison, two great grandchildren, Skylar Rawls and Alaina Rawls.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 11 A.M. at the Menola Baptist Church with the burial following at the Edwards Family Cemetery.

Officiating will be the Rev. Cecil Harkey and William Burkett.

The family will receive friends at the home of Betty Jo and Doyle at anytime.

Minnie B. Jones

AHOSKIE n Mrs. Minnie Byrum Jones, 96, died Wednesday, May 17, 2006 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. A native of Bertie County, she was predeceased in death by her husband of over 50 years, Eddie A. Jones, son, Eddie A. Jones, Jr., son, Jimmy Gray Jones, daughter, Louise Harris, daughter, Peggy Jones, and her parents, Henry W. and Francis Baker Byrum. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and a Baptist.

She is survived by daughters, Dorothy Whitley and husband, Luther of Harrellsville and Bobbie Byrum of Woodland; sons, Wilma Jones and wife, Alice of Murfreesboro, Melvin Jones of Woodland, Dale Jones and wife, Connie of Conway, Robert Jones and wife, Diann of Merry Hill, Henry Kirkland Jones of Merry Hill, Thomas Jones and wife, Olivia of Merry Hill; 37 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral ceremony will be conducted at the graveside, Hebron Baptist Church, Friday, May 19, 2006 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Al Jarrell. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren will serve as honorary casket bearers.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 18, 2006 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander.
