M. Retha Cowan

AHOSKIE n Margaret Retha Cowan, 95, of the Menola Community, died Friday, May 12, 2006, in Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley, Rich Square.

Miss Cowan was born in Hertford County, a daughter of the late Joseph Franklin Cowan and Eva Ernestine Chitty Cowan.

She was the oldest member of Menola Baptist Church.

Miss Retha retired in 1991 as secretary and bookkeeper for Garrett’s Funeral Home.

She had also served in this capacity at Garrett’s Furniture Store and Garrett’s Jewelry with 48 years of service to these companies.

Survivors include two nieces, Hilda Drake and husband, R. E. of Newsoms, VA, Virginia C. Connell of Albemarle, NC; a nephew, Edwin H. Brett and wife, Joyce of Murfreesboro, NC; several great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Miss Retha’s life was held at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2006 at Menola Baptist Church, with the Rev. Cecil Harkey officiating.

Burial followed in the Cowan Family Cemetery.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 14, 2006, and assembled at the Menola Community Building on Monday, prior to services.

J.C. Holloman, Sr.

POWELLSVILLE – Joseph Cling (J.C.) Holloman, Sr. 90, of

400 Block of Bethlehem Church Rd., died May 12, 2006, at Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City, N.C.

Mr. Holloman was born September 20, 1915 in Powellsville, N.C, the son of the late Cling and Essie Conner Holloman. and was a graduate of Powellsville High School, attended Wake Forest University, and Campbell College.

Mr. Holloman grew up on his parents family farm in Powellsville, and after completing his education he worked with Swift & Company in Norfolk, Va. After

World War II, he returned home and married Lillian Earl Mizelle and they opened the Office Supply store in Ahoskie, N. C. They later sold the business and J.C. began selling insurance for Mutual/United of Omaha Insurance Companies from which he retired.

J.C served in the U. S. Army during World War II, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he received Infantryman badge Ex 30 Caliber Rifle. He also served in Ardennes Rhineland; Central Europe, and receive the American Theater Service Metal; EAME Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Medal; and World War II Victory Medal.

Upon retirement he returned to the family farm and enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lillian Earl Holloman, one daughter; Julie Holloman Terry and Husband Garry; one sister; Faye Hoggard, Chesapeake, Va. Besides his parents Mr. Holloman was predeceased by a son Joseph Cling (Jay) Holloman, Jr. a daughter, Vicky Holloman, one sister, Elma Pierce, and a brother Bruce Holloman.

Joseph A. Roseborough

GATESVILLE — Joseph Anthony Roseborough, 37, of Gatesville died May 10, 2006 at the Brian Center Nursing Home in Hertford.

Survivors include his mother, Mary J. Riddick Daye of Gatesville, his father, James L. Roseborough, of Baltimore, Md.; and a sister, Heather Bridges of High Point.

Viewing will be Saturday at St. John Community Christian Church in Roduco beginning at 12 noon until the time of the service. Family and friends will be received at the home of the deceased.

A funeral service was conducted Saturday at St. John Community Christian Church by the Rev. Andre Dent. Burial was in Lebanon Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Gatesville.

Garland R. Leggett

WINDSOR n Garland Ray Leggett, 79, a native of Bertie County, died May 4, 2006 at his home. He was the widower of Jessie Mae Sanderlin Leggett.

A graveside funeral was conducted Monday at Edgewood Cemetery by the Rev. Michael Bailey. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Leggett retired from Stubbs Veneer and Lea Lumber Company.

He is survived by a brother, Robert Rudolph Leggett of Aulander.

Myrtle B. Harrell

MURFREESBORO n Myrtle Byrd Harrell, 72, a native of Northampton County, died May 13, 2006 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Jerry Boyd and the Rev. Billie Sellers. Burial was in Milwaukee Cemetery. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Mrs. Harrell was a licensed practical nurse and graduate from the Nursing Program at RCCC. She was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ray O. Harrell; her daughter, Teri Brown of Ahoskie; a stepson, Ray O. Harrell Jr. of Atlantic Beach; a stepdaughter, Karen Harrell-Tosto of Wilson; a brother, Harvey P. Byrd of Severn; a sister, Olivia B. Spence of Gates County; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Thamar H. Eure

RODUCO – Thamar Howell Eure, 90, a native of Gates County, died May 13, 2006, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Gordon Holland Eure.

Mrs. Eure was a retired seamstress, she had worked at both Don Juan Mfg. in Hertford and the Ahoskie Sewing Factory. She attended Eure Baptist Church and in 2005 received the Longest Survivor Award from the local Relay for Life chapter.

Survivors include her son, Gordon Eldridge Eure of Eure; Zuni, Va.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Proctor. Burial will be in the Ahoskie Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Relay for Life.

Horace Jenkins Sr.

NORFOLK, Va. – Horace Jenkins Sr., 69, a native of Woodland, died May 9, 2006.

He was the widower of Bertha W. Jenkins.

Jenkins was a self-employed contractor.

Survivors include daughters, Shelby Gill and Hortense Stepney, both of Norfolk and Blanche Anderson of Pensacola, Fla.; five sons, Horace Jenkins Jr. of Norfolk, Anthony Jenkins of Newport News, Troy Jenkins of Hampton, Darrin Jenkins of Charlotte and Jermale Jenkins of Atlanta, Ga.; five sisters; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Lee’s Chapel AME Church, 1036 Bells Mill Road, Chesapeake. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge.

Wilbert Price

WASHINGTON, D.C. n Wilbert Wadell Price, died May 8, 2006 at the Veterans Hospital, Washington.

A homegoing service will be conducted Wednesday at Stewart Funeral Home, 401 Benning Road, NE, Washington, D.C. 20019. Information furnished by Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha Grady Price; 10 children; three sisters, Clara Price Cloyd of Ahoskie, Ethel Ebron Caveness of New York and Betty Ebron Myrick of Ahoskie; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

AHOSKIE – Carl Stanley “Red Eye” Cofield, 45, a native of Hertford County, died May 12, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

his mother, Frances G. Cofield Holley; a stepfather, James Holley of Colerain; his father, William A. Catherine Greene

MURFREESBORO – Catherine Greene, 85, a native of Arundel County, Md., died, May 10, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Murfreesboro.

Survivors include one stepbrother, Lloyd Glasper of Baltimore; one sister, Hattie G. Barnhill of Greenville; and one stepsister, Lauretta Reid of Baltimore.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at

First Baptist Church Murfreesboro on by Rev. Robert Richardson, III.

HARRELLSVILLE – Naomi Revelle, 65, a native of Hertford County, died May 12, 2006 at her residence

She was a LPN at Kings County Hospital, Brooklyn, NY.

She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Derkel Revelle of Harrellsville; one brother, Luther Winborne of New Jersey;

and three sisters, Delores Drew and Emma Revelle Buggie, both of Harrellsville and Elizabeth Finley of Baltimore, MD.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at 2 p.m. at New Harrellsville Chapel Baptist Church by Rev. Robert Lewis.

Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
