AHOSKIE – Kerr Vance scored three goals in each half while holding Ridgecroft to just three shots as the Spartans took a 6-0 win over the Lady Rams.
The Spartans kept the ball in Ridgecroft territory for most of the game, using crisp passes to spread the field and find the open man.
The Lady Rams defense of Bardin Murray, Sarah Grace Magette and Erin Riddick was kept busy all afternoon as the Spartans recorded 50 shots.
Ridgecroft keeper Sarah Beth Greene had an outstanding afternoon in goal, recording 36 saves, including several fast breaks and one-on-ones.
Kerr Vance scored in the twenty-fifth minute after Megan Franklin found the left side of the net.
Five minutes later the Spartans scored again as Franklin crossed to an open Hailey Meffert, whose shot was just beyond Greene’s reach.
The final score of the first half came with three minutes on the clock.
Franklin’s shot to the upper left corner was good and the Spartans took a 3-0 lead at the end of 40 minutes.
The Lady Rams tried get their offense going but the Spartan fullbacks were often at the 50-yard line and able to stop a Ridgecroft drive.
Meffert scored two more goals in the second half and Tricia Terry added a shot in the right corner to give the Spartans a 6-0 victory.
&uot;We inherited a young team,&uot; said Ridgecroft head coach Aaron Martin, whose team roster boasts only two seniors and three juniors.
Five of the starters have never played soccer prior to this season.
&uot;Mental lapses hurt us today,&uot; he added. &uot;We’re a team that can’t get down early but they came out and battled hard the entire match.&uot;
The Rams played without Kristin Cayton, who was injured earlier this year and returned the lineup for Tuesday’s game against Hobgood, but was injured in the win and missed Wednesday’s match.
