Lydia Spivey

HOBBSVILLE – Lydia Spivey, 94, a native of Hobbsville, died April 2, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

She was a member of Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Gatesville.

Survivors include five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Michael Williams.

Interment will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Dereth Finnell

Raleigh – Dereth Alan Toshario Finnell (DJ), 18, died Sunday, April 2, 2006 at Wake Medical Hospital.

DJ was born on July 30, 1987 in Hampton, VA. to Terri Lorraine Finnell of Raleigh, NC and Dereth Alan Lindsey of Hampton, VA. DJ was a resident of Raleigh, NC and was member of Believer’s House Worldwide Ministries, Fayetteville NC. He attended Southern Nash High School, Springhope, NC.

He is survived by seven sisters, two nephews and three nieces, maternal grandmother, Mary Lewis (Elbert), of Newport News, VA, grandfather, James McCoy Finnell (Mildred) of Hampton, VA. Great-grandmother, Ollie Lewis of Como, NC. Parental- grandmother, Elroy Pratt Hampton, VA and grandfather, Winfred Lindsey, Hampton, VA. A host of aunts, uncle, cousins, and friends.

A funeral will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 8, at Carlton L. Grey Funeral Home. Burial in Carolina Biblical Gardens, Raleigh, NC. Arrangements by Carlton L. Grey Funeral Home, Raleigh.

Louis Smith

AHOSKIE — Louis Edward Smith, 67, of the 900 block of NC Highway 461, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born in Bertie County, a son of the late Charlie Minton and Hazel Miller Smith.

He was a retired corrections officer with the NC Department of Corrections, an active member and deacon of Union Baptist Church, and was an army veteran serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Benton Smith; a daughter, Tammy Smith Askew and husband, Jay of Ahoskie; a son, Chris Smith of Ahoskie; sisters, Ruby Mince of Tyner, Rachel Smith of Ahoskie, Mary Skinner of Edenton; brothers, Charlie Smith of Aulander, Andrew Smith of Suffolk, VA; and two grandchildren, Krislyn Askew and Hunter Smith.

A celebration of life service was conducted on Monday, April 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny Baker and Rev. Curtis Pixler officiating.

Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, and other times at the home.

Memorial donations may be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, 521 Myers Street, Ahoskie, NC, 27910, or to Union Baptist Church Parsonage Fund, 431 Boone Farm Road, Ahoskie.

Andrew Speller

WINDSOR n Andrew Speller, 67, a native of New York City, died April 1, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Zahariah Wilson. Burial will be in the Cherry family cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Speller was retired from Coburn Lumber Co.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Cherry; three daughters, Gloria Carter, Vernell S. Rodgers and Quintina Speller; one stepdaughter, Shirley White; two sons, Barry Speller and Wayne Speller; two sisters, Alice Stewart and Janice Weathers; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Michael Cameron

WINDSOR n Michael “JB” Cameron, 62, died March 28, 2006 at his residence.

Survivors include two grandchildren.

No services will be held. Cremation will be done on April 4. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

MURFREESBORO n Christine S. Blythe, 31, a native of Newport News, Va., died April 2, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Carroll R. Dickens Sr. Burial will be in Cumbo Baptist Church Cemetery, Rich Square. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Cumbo Missionary Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher, youth advisor and a senior choir member.

Survivors include a son, LaChristian Jaquan Blythe of Murfreesboro; a daughter, Jamesha Tyna’ah Edmonds of Murfreesboro; mothers, Christine Blythe Shoats of Newport News and Doris Risper; fathers, Wardell Callis of Newport News and Claude Blythe of Como; brothers, Wardell Callis Jr. and Nathaniel Callis, both of Yorktown, Robert Shoats, Marcus Shoats, Andrew Blythe, Casey Lawrence and Calvin Lawrence, all of Newport News, and Alphonso Lawrence of Woodland; and sisters, Cheryl Gray of Newport News, Robinetta Matthews of New Jersey, Latanya Shoats and Kathleen Shoats, both of Hampton, Annie Peele of Murfreesboro and Delia Lawrence of Windsor.

Lillie Mae R. Lynch

DURHAM – Dr. Lillie Mae Riddick Lynch, 88, a native of Gatesville, died April 1, 2006, at a Durham healthcare facility.

Mrs. Lynch was a lifetime member of Lebanon Grove Baptist Church in Gatesville. She was a retired educator, taught for more than 40 years in North Carolina, Portsmouth, New York City and New Jersey.

Survivors include two brothers, Burnett Riddick of Norfolk, Va., and Oliver Wendell Riddick of Baltimore, MD.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday in Lebanon Grove Baptist Church, Carter Road, Gatesville. Family visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Fisher Funeral Parlor, Durham, is in charge.

S. Ray Walker

GASTON – S. Ray walker, 63, died April 2, 2006.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday, at Wrenn, Clark and Hagen Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery, Weldon.

Gladys S. Joyner

NEW YORK, NY n Gladys Saunders Joyner, died April 1, 2006 in Baltimore, Md.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial will be in the Askew Cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She is survived by one son, Clifford Joyner of Baltimore.

Cozie M. Phelps

WINDSOR n Cozie McKenzie Phelps, 95, formerly of Windsor, and a native of Georgia, died April 4, 2006 at Britthaven Nursing Home, Washington. She was the widow Whit G. Phelps.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, by the Rev. Chuck Gray. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Phelps was a member of Windsor Assembly of God.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Linda P. Buck of Greenville and Helen B. Perrin of Gainesville, Fla.; one stepson, Harry Phelps of Chocowinity; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

AHOSKIE n Pauline Mitchell Wynn, died April 2, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Wynn was a member of Conoconary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Gloria M. and Audrey A. Gatling, both of Hampton, Va.

William Holloman

AHOSKIE — William Holloman, 58, died April 4, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Zion Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. James Mercer. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
