Grace S. Mitchell

Harrellsville, N. C.: Grace Spencer Mitchell 88, died Saturday April 1, 2006 at Fountain of the Albemarle in Tarboro, N. C.

She was a native of Hyde County, the daughter of the late Samuel G. and Eva Williams Spencer. She was a graduate of East Carolina Teachers College, now East Carolina University, a retired school teacher having taught in Hertford and Bertie County school systems. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Tarboro and a former member of Colerain Baptist Church was very active in the W.M.U, and a member of the local Home Demonstration Club.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Linwood Barnes Mitchell.

Surviving are two daughters; Linda M. Amerson and husband Ike, Rocky Mount, N. C.,

Paula M. Morgan and husband Mike, Westfield, N.J., one brother; Ray Spencer, Swan Quarter, N. C.

three grandchildren; Brad Amerson, Greenville, N.C., Karen A. Obara, Kimberton, Pa., Jenise Morgan, Westfield, N. J., three great grandchildren; Ford Amerson, Kendall Obara, Claire Obara.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Mitchell will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday April 4, 2006

at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N. C. with the Rev. Shelby Stephens officiating, Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 P.M. prior to services Tuesday and suggest Memorial

Louis E. Smith

AHOSKIE n Louis Edward Smith, 67, of the 900 block of NC Highway 461, died Friday, March 31, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Smith was born in Bertie County, a son of the late Charlie Minton and Hazel Miller Smith.

He was a retired corrections officer with the NC Department of Corrections, an active member and deacon of Union Baptist Church, and was an army veteran serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Benton Smith; a daughter, Tammy Smith Askew and husband, Jay of Ahoskie; a son, Chris Smith of Ahoskie; sisters, Ruby Mince of Tyner, Rachel Smith of Ahoskie, Mary Skinner of Edenton; brothers, Charlie Smith of Aulander, Andrew Smith of Suffolk, VA; and two grandchildren, Krislyn Askew and Hunter Askew.

A celebration of life service was conducted on Monday, April 3, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Union Baptist Church, with the Rev. Johnny Baker and Rev. Curtis Pixler officiating.

Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, and other times at the home.

Charles Lowe

BROOKLYN, NY n Charles L. Lowe, 77, formerly of Halifax County, died March 30, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Smith Chapel Baptist Church, Enfield. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Deloris Alston

BROOKLYN, NY, Deloris Alston, 71, formerly of Enfield, died March 23, 2006 in Brooklyn.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Whitakers. Burial was in Cedarview Cemetery, Enfield. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, was in charge.

Kenneth R. Thomas

ROCKY MOUNT n Kenneth Ray Thomas, 49, died March 27, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Word Tabernacle Church. Burial was in Marks Chapel Church Cemetery, Rocky Mount. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Verna M. Staton

ROCKY MOUNT n Verna Mae Staton, 77, died March 25, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Thornes Chapel Missionary Church. Burial was in Gardens of Gethsamane. H.D. Pope Funeral Home was in charge.

Christine Ramsey

WINDSOR n Christine Babson Ramsey, 64, a native of Columbus County, died April 1, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Floyd Arthur Ramsey.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. Preston Jernigan. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Ramsey was a homemaker and a retired sales clerk.

Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Ramsey of Alabama; two sons, Vince Acree of Chester, Va., and Roger Acree of Sans Souci; a half sister, Connie Thompson of Clarkton; two brothers, Billy Babson of Elizabethtown and Arthur G. Babson of Taylor’s, SC; and two half brothers, Harry and Larry Ransom, both of Clarkton.

Sally M. Freeman

GATES – Sally Mary Mathias Freeman, 86, a native of Gates County, died March 31, 2006, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, Va. She was the widow of Joseph Ray Freeman Jr.

Mrs. Freeman was a graduate of East Carolina Teacher’s College, now East Carolina University, she taught for more than 30 years on the elementary level in the Gates County school system. A member of Reynoldson Baptist Church and its WMU, she had served for many years as a Sunday school teacher, and was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Gates County Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her son, Joseph Ray Freeman III of New Bern; a sister, Margaret Mathias Matthews of Richmond; two brothers, Herbert Mathias of Portsmouth and Raymond Mathias of Holland, Va.; a half sister, Ora Leigh Baker of Gates; and a granddaughter.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Revs. John Wilkinson, Billy Presley and Don Stewart. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Reynoldson Baptist Church to be directed to the Freeman Camp Cale Scholarship, c/o Charles Cale, 8353 Longstreet Lane, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Dorene P. Whitaker

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Dorene Pierce Whitaker, 77, a native of Colerain, died March 31, 2006. She was the widow of William F. Whitaker.

Mrs. Whitaker worked at Fort Lee until 1958. She was also a partner with her husband’s business of Courtesy Lincoln Mercury. She was past president of the Richmond Women’s Club, member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Virginia Beach General Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Whitaker.

A memorial service was held in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. She will be missed by the many who loved her. I love you sunshine.

AHOSKIE n Pauline Mitchell Wynn, died April 2, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
