First Maple yields drug arrest

AHOSKIE – First and Maple n Ahoskie’s infamous drug corner n was the scene of two arrests here Tuesday afternoon.
The latest drug charges involved a pair of subjects n James Lassiter, 56, of 405 Church Street, Ahoskie, and 19-year-old Keon Tyvelle Harrell of 135 West Modlin Road, Ahoskie.
According to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan, two of his officers, Captain Tim Lassiter and Lt. Mike Stephenson, were on routine patrol when they noticed what was termed as “suspicious activity” at the corner of First and Maple streets.
“One subject was seen handing something to the other subject,” Sheriff Vaughan said. “They then observed one of the two subjects (Lassiter) put something in his mouth and walk away.”
The law enforcement officers approached the two subjects. A search was performed and cocaine was discovered, including a small quantity in Lassiter’s mouth.
Lassiter was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. He was jailed under a $5,000 bond.
Harrell faces charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, sell of cocaine and possession of cocaine. His bond was set at $50,000.
Additionally, Harrell was found to be in possession of $222 in U.S. currency.
Both men were scheduled to make their first court appearance on Friday.
“I would like to commend both officers for being so observant and paying attention to detail,” Sheriff Vaughan said. “The size of the drug arrest does not matter. We will continue in our ongoing effort to slow down the sale of drugs in Hertford County.”
