Herman S. Overton

AHOSKIE – Herman Sherwood Overton, 84, a native of Hertford County, died March 4, 2006 at his home.

Overton was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church and a retired shoe department manager for Ahoskie Department Store. He was also a Navy Veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife; Chloree Vick Overton, one daughter; Alice Jane Beamon of Myrtle Beach, S.C., two sons; Herman Brinkley Overton and Richard Sherwood Overton, both of Ahoskie; one sister; Hazel Howell of Portsmouth; one brother; John Overton of Ahoskie; six grandchildren; one step-grandchild, and several great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Tommy Kiker. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Helen E. Little

SEABOARD n Helen Estelle Little, 82, a native of Northampton County, died March 3, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A graveside service was conducted Sunday at Seaboard Cemetery by the Rev. Tommy Glover. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, was in charge.

Miss Little was a member of Seaboard Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Annie Louise Levins of Florida; and two nephews.

Ethel M. Malone

FRANKLIN, Va. – Ethel Marie Malone, a native of Severn, died March 2, 2006, in Southampton Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include three sisters, Mary Abraham of Newport News, Martha McNeil of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Betty Hanson of Orland, Fla.; and two brothers, James Malone of Jarratt, and Thomas E. Harris Jr. of Franklin.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Southview Cemetery with the Rev. Withrow Stockton of Richmond, Va. Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 S. Main St., Franklin, is in charge.

Jessie Nickson

ROCKY MOUNT — Jessie Nickson, 75, died March 5, 2006.

Alice T. Whitehurst

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Alice Turner Whitehurst, 81, a native of Rich Square, died March 2, 2006, in Richmond. She was the widow of Roger C. Whitehurst Jr.

Mrs. Whitehurst retired as bookkeeper from Southeastern Rehab Center and Borden Chemical. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Hedgepeth of Kill Devil Hills; two sons, Roger C. Whitehurst Jr. of Sandston, Va., and Thomas E. Whitehurst Saltville, Va.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. William Keith Nesbitt. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Vicki B. Gilliam

ROXBORO n Vicki Barrett Gilliam, 62, a native of Northampton County, died March 4, 2006 at Person Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Gilliam took part in the founding of Roxboro Christian Academy and taught there a number of years. She was one of the persons who began the Family and Life Services of Person County, and there she had donated her time and resources.

Survivors include her mother, Elizabeth Vick Barrett of Conway; her husband, Tom R. Gilliam of the home; one daughter, Elizabeth Gilliam Brooks of Roxboro; two sons, Timothy Gilliam of Roxboro and John Gilliam of South Boston, VA; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph Barrett and Tommy Barrett both of Conway; and one sister, LeVone B. Williams of Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Theresa Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown. A private burial will be Tuesday afternoon in the City Cemetery in South Boston, Va. John A. Drew Jr.

AULANDER – Mr. John Asa Drew, Jr. age 79, died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC on March 5, 2006.

He was married to Vera Bryant on August 2, 1947.

Mr. Drew was a member of the Aulander Baptist Church in Aulander and was active in the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class.

He worked for the North State Provision Co., Inc. for thirty eight years, serving on the board of directors and retiring from the company.

During his life, Mr. Drew coached many little league baseball teams and adult softball teams.

He has remained a lifelong supporter and avid fan.

Meaning most to Mr. Drew was his family.

His life with his family was both fulfilling and rewarding. His love for them was shown and felt throughout the life of John Asa Drew, Jr.

Mr. Drew was a charter member of both the Millennium Fire Department and the VFW Post # 11226 which he was instrumental in organizing.

Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Lettie Casper Drew Casper and John Asa Drew, Sr. as well as two brothers, James and George Drew.

Survivors include his wife, Vera B. Drew of the home, one daughter, Janet D. Emory and her husband Wayne of Aulander, NC, four sons, Larry Drew and his wife Carolyn of Aulander, NC, Billy Drew and his wife Kathy of St. John, NC, Fred Drew and friend Sandra Peele of Aulander, NC and Eddie Drew and his wife, Vicky of Millennium, NC, eleven grandchildren, Jeff Emory and his wife Angela, Mickey Drew and his wife Mindy, Brian Drew and his fianc\u00E9 Beth, Scott Drew and his wife, Angie, Sonya Ramsay and her husband Joe, Heath Drew and his fianc\u00E9 Kaci, Kristy Dunlow and her husband Scott, David Simmons and his wife Denise, Reba Drew, Titia Vaughan and her husband Mike, and Tracy Burkett and her husband Scott.

As well as twelve great grandchildren, Dylan and Katlyn Drew, Trey, Joseph and Zachary Ramsay, Scott Dunlow, David, Jr., Caleb and Gracie Elizabeth Simmons, Michael Vaughan, and Ashley and Austin Burkett.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at 2 P.M. at the Chapel of Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, NC with the Rev. Tom Culver and Rev. Lester Jarrett officiating.

The interment will follow at the Aulander Cemetery in Aulander, NC.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M.

COLERAIN n James Bell, died March 2, 2006.

WINDSOR — Sarah P. Rodgers, 72, died March 4, 2006 in her home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses, Windsor. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

John L. Tyler

LEWISTON — John Lewis Tyler, died March 1, 2006.

Survivors include his mother, Bertha R. Tyler of Lewiston; two brothers, Larry Tyler and Terry Tyler, both of Lewiston; and four sisters, Bertha O. Taylor of Windsor, Patricia Tyler of Murfreesboro, and Essie Tyler and Geraldine Taylor, both of Ahoskie.
