Roberta W. Lee

MURFREESBORO n Roberta W. Lee, 93, passed away, peacefully, Tuesday, February 21, at Vintage Nursing Home in Williamston. Born in Cornelia, Georgia on August 10, 1912, she moved with her family to Bryson City, NC where she spent her early years. She was active in the Murfreesboro community and taught Sunday School for many years, helping to instill Christian values in many young people.

Her husband, R. Edward Lee, predeceased her in 1982.

She is survived by a daughter, Roberta Lee Boykin; a granddaughter, Roberta B. Rowe and her husband, Todd Rowe, and a great-grandson, David Rowe, all of Mercer Island, Washington; a son, Robert E. Lee Jr. and his wife, Ann J. Lee of Murfreesboro; and a granddaughter, Ann Mariah Lee of Winston-Salem, and a grandson, Robert E. Lee, III, presently of Alta, Utah.

Her strong spirit will be missed by her family and friends. The greatest honor you could give her would be to think about your blessings and thank God for them.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church or to Chowan College.

A memorial service will be held at Murfreesboro Baptist Church on Saturday, February 25, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Lee Canipe officiating.

The family will receive friends at the home of Robert E. Lee, Jr. at 206 Holly Hill Road, Murfreesboro.

Joe Johnson

LITTLETON n Joe Allen Johnson, 59, died February 22, 2006 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

George L. Holley

NORFOLK, Va. – George L. &uot;Shortman&uot; Holley, 61, a native of Edenton, died February 20, 2006.

Holley was a member of First Baptist Bolling Brook, Norfolk, where he served as an usher. He was also a member of Prince Hall Mason Excelsior Lodge No. 87 and the Sons of the American Legion. He retired in 2000 from the U.S. Postal Service.

Survivors include his wife, Annette M. Holley of Norfolk; two daughters, Cherral Jones of Yeadon, Pa., and Camille Sheppard of Westchester, Pa.; two sons, Grant Holley of Philadelphia and Dedric Holley Sr. of Norfolk; his stepfather, William Freeman; four sisters, Minnie Walker and Althene Degraffenreid, both of Windsor, Joyce Beginni of Kingford, Texas, and Thelma Blount of Norfolk; four brothers, Keith Freeman, William Freeman and Frond Freeman, all of New York City and Thomas Bredly of Rocky Mount; and 12 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St., with the Rev. Clinton Brown Sr. Interment will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Roy L. Bynum Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Roy L. &uot;No Doubt&uot; Bynum Sr., 60, a native of Seaboard, died February 18, 2006, at George Washington Health and Rehabilitation for Chesapeake.

Bynum was employed by the Local 1248, International Longshoreman Association for 10 years.

Survivors include his former wife, Barbara Carter Bynum Harrison of Chesapeake; two daughters, of Portsmouth and Veleda Jones of Chesapeake; four sons, Roy Lee Bynum Jr., Roger Lee Bynum, Anthony Bynum, all of Portsmouth and Randall Bynum of Chesapeake; four sisters, Lucille Deloatch of Hampton, Peggy Ann Bynum and Brenda Hill, both of Washington, D.C., and Audrey Lee Wood of Maryland; a brother, Raymond Bynum of New Jersey; and 18 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Ransome For Souls Church, 3600 Race St., Portsmouth, by Dr. Wilhelminia Cherry and Pastor Cordell Carter. Jean R. Hall

AHOSKIE -Mrs. Jean Rogerson Hall, age 70, died at her home on Thursday, February 23, 2006.

Mrs. Hall was a native of Hertford County.

She attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC and was the former manager of the Duck Thur Convenience Store in Ahoskie, NC.

She was a member of the Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Mary Terry Rogerson and Paul Johnson Rogerson, her sister, Evelyn L. Rogerson and her brother Paul J. Rogerson.

Survivors include her husband, James Howard Hall, Jr., two sons James Howard Hall, III and Charles Preston Hall and one brother, James Paul Rogerson, all of Ahoskie, NC.

Also surviving is P.J. Rogerson of Piedmont, AL, a nephew that was raised by the Hall’s from the age of five.

Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC with the burial following at the Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.

Officiating will be the Rev.’s Robert May, Jeffery Skiles and Michael Williams.

Glennis B. Jones

GREENSBORO n Glennis B. Jones, 92, a native of Hertford County, died February 23, 2006 at Blumenthal Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Jones, Sr., and son, Richard (Dickey) Jones.

Survivors include four daughters, Phyllis Johnson of Forestville, MD, Ruth West of Voorhees, NJ, Gayle Starr of North Potomac, MD and Gwendolyn Jagernauth of Seattle Washington; three sons, Arthur Jones, Jr. of Raleigh, NC, Willis (Pete) Jones of Tucson, Arizona and Joseph Jones of Greensboro, NC; four sisters, Ruth Quarles of Mitchellville, MD, Esther Oliphant of Reidsville, NC, Bernice Colson of Oxford, NC and Carolyn Goins of Richmond, Va.; 17 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 12 p.m. at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC. Viewing one hour prior to service is scheduled. The Reverend Robert Ashe will officiate. Burial will follow in the family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge of arrangements.

Miranda K. Gurkin

GREENVILLE n Miranda Kathleen Gurkin, 16, a native of Tarboro, died February 24, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the D.S. Moss family cemetery, on Hwy. 48 West, Enfield. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 401 E. 4th St., Greenville, NC 27858; or to a charity of one’s choice.

Miranda lived in Ahoskie a number of years, where she attended Ridgecroft School. Since 2002 she lived in Greenville, where she was a sophomore at J.H. Rose High School. She danced at the NC Academy of Dance Arts, and was a member of the J.H. Rose Symphonic Band. She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her mother, Danelle Moss Gurkin of Greenville; her father, Worth W. Gurkin Jr. and stepmother, Jewel of Winterville; maternal grandmother, Harriet B. Moss of Enfield; and paternal grandmother, Kathryn B. Gurkin of Winterville.
