Fike rallies by HCHS

AHOSKIE – Wilson’s R.L. Fike High School broke open a tie game to defeat Hertford County 13-8 here Wednesday.

The Golden Demons scored five runs in the top of the fifth frame to snap a six-all tie in the non-league baseball contest.

Fike put together six runs in the first two innings to grab a 6-0 advantage, but HCHS came storming back when they plated six runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning.

Chris Mizelle singled to center before Logan Kinlaw singled to left. The two advanced to third and second respectively on a wild pitch before Richard Burns walked to load the bases.

Mizelle scored on a wild pitch to get the Bears on the board and then Ryan Matthews drove in Kinlaw and Burton with his two-RBI double down the leftfield line.

Matthews scored on a Michael Burton RBI-triple and Burton scored on a Heath Britt RBI-single to left field. Britt scored on an Andre Weaver single to left to deadlock the score at six-all.

The Bears’ defense turned double plays in the third and fourth innings to keep Fike off the board and preserve the tie.

The Golden Demons, however, broke open the game with five runs in the top of the fifth frame to take a an 11-6 advantage.

HCHS responded with two runs in the bottom of the same inning.

Ryan Staton singled to centerfield before Burns singled to left. They both scored on a double by Matthews to trim the deficit to 11-8.

Fike added one in the sixth and one in the seventh to preserve the victory.

Matthews went five innings for the loss while Burton threw the final two innings on the mound.

The Bears had 12 hits and were led offensively by Matthews. He was 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Weaver and Stanton both checked in at 2-for-4.

The Bears (0-3) will play at Rocky Mount today (Saturday) at 1 p.m.
