LEWISTON-WOODVILLE – One man is dead and another is being held without bond for murder following an altercation between two Lewiston-Woodville men here Wednesday night.
John Lewis Tyler, 58 of Governor’s Road, was found shot to death at approximately 8 p.m. in the front yard of 308 Pine Street (Johnny Mack Lassiter’s Trailer Park).
While the results of an autopsy are pending, Bertie Sheriff Greg Atkins said it appears Tyler died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Atkins said the alleged shooter, 20-year-old Taiyon Deshawn Cherry who resides at the scene of the crime, was at his residence when Bertie deputies arrived.
“As a result of our investigation, it appears there was some type of altercation inside the residence that apparently spilled outside,” Atkins said.
The Sheriff added there were several other individuals at the residence, but stopped short of revealing any involvement they may have had in the altercation leading up to the murder.
Cherry was arrested for murder and is being held under no bond at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail. He made his first court appearance on Thursday.
The SBI crime scene unit and agents assisted the Bertie Sheriff’s Office in the investigation. Sheriff Atkins thanked them for that assistance.
