WINTON – Suddenly there are races in Hertford County.
Both incumbent Hertford County Commissioners will be opposed in the May 2 primary after filing ended Tuesday afternoon.
William &uot;Bill&uot; Burgess filed Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for the District 2 Hertford County Commission seat currently held by Curtis Freeman.
Freeman, the chairman of the Board of Commissioners, filed earlier this month for his second term in office.
Also seeing opposition will be two-term Commissioner Johnnie Ray Farmer (D-1st), who is being opposed by Carl White.
White filed late Friday afternoon while Farmer filed on the first day.
Two other incumbents in Hertford County will not see any opposition in the May primary or in the November general election.
Two-term incumbent Sheriff Juan Vaughan (D) is unopposed in his bid for a third term in office.
Clerk of Superior Court Shirley Johnson, who is also a Democrat, is likewise unopposed to return to her job.
The Hertford County Board of Education is elected during the November general election.
The filing for that non-partisan Board will be in July, according to Hertford County Election Director Sheila Fleetwood.
