AHOSKIE – It took a late first quarter run to put Bertie ahead.

Once the Lady Falcons claimed the 12-7 advantage, however, they rolled to an easy 56-34 win over rival Hertford County here Friday night.

The Lady Bears had built a 7-4 lead on the strength of scores from Chiquitta Holloman, Ashley Weaver and Kenya Cofield, but Bertie came storming back.

Jessica Breland buried a triple to start the scoring spurt, followed by a free throw and a hoop from Equalia Vines. Tierra Brown polished off the run with a basket that put Bertie up 12-7.

Cofield’s hoop as the first quarter ended got the Lady Bears back within 12-9, but it was as close as they would get.

Satora Swain had six of her eight points in succession, all coming in the first two minutes of the second period. She hit a bucket and made a shot from the line for an old-fashioned three-point play and then followed that up with a hoop and another free throw to give the Lady Falcons an 18-9 lead.

Cofield buried a triple before Jamie Britt hit a hoop to get the Lady Bears within four points (18-14).

BHS scored the next 10 points and 15 of the next 16 to go ahead by a 33-15 count at the end of the first half.

Breland started the spurt with a free throw which was followed by hoops from Laquetta Leary and Breland. Leary had two more hoops during the spurt which was interrupted only by a free throw by Lannette Roberson.

Tierra Perry and Breland scored the remaining five points before the half to secure the score at the intermission.

Swain started the second half with a hoop that put Bertie’s lead to 20, but Hertford County responded with five of the next seven points to trim the deficit to 37-20.

Breland put together back-to-back hoops before Ashley Berryman scored to give Bertie a 43-20 advantage. They led 46-24 at the end of the third period.

Cofield led all scorers, hitting for 18 for the Lady Bears while Breland was the only Bertie player in double digits as she scored 17.

The Lady Falcons did have balanced scoring with Perry, Brown and Swain all scoring eight points while Berryman and Leary had six each.

Hertford County (4-9) will host Currituck Thursday evening in a Northeastern Coastal Conference matchup while Bertie’s Wednesday contest with Williamston has been cancelled. The Falcons will play again Friday when they host Northeastern.
