Lady Barons rally past East

AHOSKIE – Gates County held off Northampton-East as the Lady Barons took a 41-37 victory in the consolation game of the News-Herald Classic here Tuesday night.

Gates took an early 3-0 lead after a shot from beyond the arc from Javan Parks.

Shanika Mason sank a foul shot but Jalisa Bradley hit a Gates bucket to pull the Barons ahead 5-1.

Jalisa Parker drove up the lane for two points for the Rams but cut the lead to two (5-3).

Gates scored nine unanswered points to end the first quarter with a 14-3 lead.

Bradley hit a free throw for Gates to start the second.

Jessica Price and Ebony Peoples hit back-to-back baskets for East, but Bradley sank a bucket to keep Gates out front 17-9.

The Rams then went on a 13-point scoring run to take a 20-17 lead into the half.

East kept their scoring streak going to start the third.

Darlene Smallwood and Mason hit three-pointers and Peoples added a foul shot to extend the Rams lead 27-17.

Park’s trey with just under three minutes remaining in the third broke the Gates scoring drought.

Danila Branch shot for two, but Gates answered with consecutive buckets to cut the lead to five (29-24).

Peoples’ layup gave East a 31-24 lead going into the final quarter.

After struggling from the floor, Gates found the basket in the fourth quarter, outscoring East 17-6.

Gates shot 31 percent from the floor while holding East scoreless from the field.

East was able to hold off Gates for the first seven minutes of the fourth.

With just 45 seconds remaining, Parks was fouled shooting the three and converted all three foul shots to give Gates a 37-36 lead.

East tried to drive, but Destinee Hurdle stole the ball and took it to the hoop for two.

Parks sank two more foul shots to secure the Gates win 41-37.

East struggled with their free throws as they made only 11-of-36 attempts.

The Rams also committed 26 turnovers in the loss.

Gates also struggled to hold onto the ball as they had 30 turnovers.

Bradley led Gates with 14 points and six boards.

Parks scored 11 and Hurdle added 10.

East was led by Price with 11 points.
