Doris A. Harrell

WINDSOR, Va. – Doris Ashley Harrell, 92, a native of Chowan County, died December 12, 2005. She was the widow of Walter C. Harrell and Herbert Ambrose.

Mrs. Harrell was a homemaker and a member of Eureka Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth A. Whitfield of Windsor; three sons, Wesley Ambrose of Suffolk, and Hubert and Gene Ambrose, both of Corapeake; a sister, Edna Wright of Edenton; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of Harrell & Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Cameron Currin. Burial was in Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ophelia H. Graves

NORFOLK, Va. – Ophelia Hicks Graves, 93, a native of Cofield, died December 10, 2005 at home.

Mrs. Graves was retired from Norfolk city employment for 30 years. She was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church for more than 50 years and a lifetime member of the NAACP and a charter member of the friends (Amicae) of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.

Survivors include two sisters of Norfolk; a brother of Hampton; a son of Philadelphia; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Graves can be viewed at Graves Funeral Home, 1631 Church St., Norfolk. Visitation will be at the family home. Mrs. Grave’s wishes were that flowers be donated to the sick and elderly who can enjoy them while they are alive. She desired a graveside service which will be conducted at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 1101 Campostella Road, Chesapeake, Thursday at 10 a.m.

Rachel Spivey

MT. VERNON, NY n Rachel Spivey, a native of Windsor, died December 10, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sandy Point Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. Hoyt Cooper. Burial will be in Harmond Cemetery, Windsor. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include three sons, Reginald Spivey of Weldon, Keith and Schawn Spivey, both of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Jimmie Spivey of Hampton, Va.; one sister, Sarah Spivey Jones of Upper Marlboro, Md.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT n Eliza H. Spruill, 81, died December 12, 2005.

WINDSOR n George Bridgett, 78, died December 9, 2005 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Bazemore Temple Church of God in Christ, Windsor. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

WINDSOR n Benjamin Stewart, 53, died December 10, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

HARRELLSVILLE n Mary Jane Askew, 70, a native of Hertford County, died December 12, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of United Full Gospel Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jessie Futrell III of Durham and Danny Askew of Harrellsville; three daughters, Trudy Robinson of Winterville, Danette Futrell of Ahoskie and Veronica Watford of Durham; one brother, David Lewis of Emporia, Va.; seven sisters, Mollie Parker and Hattie Downing, both of Harrellsville, Mamie Futrell of Portsmouth, Va., Ellen Terry of Washington, D.C., Fannie Brown of Wilmington, DE, Elsie Sykes and Dorothy Singletary, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

Pauline Thompson

LEWISTON n Pauline Thompson, died December 14, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Beautiful Zion Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial will be in Weeping Mary Church Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Beautiful Zion Baptist Church.

Survivors include four sons, Leroy and Samuel Thompson, both of Philadelphia, Pa., Daniel Thompson of Lansdone and Morris Thompson of Ewing, N.J.; two daughters, Amaza Thompson of Lewiston and Jeanette Ruffin of Rich Square; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Edgar Pritchard

ROXBORO n Edgar Pritchard, 73, a native of Ahoskie, died December 14, 2005 at Halifax Regional Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Terry Scearce. Interment will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Kevin and Angela Throckmorton, Scottsburg, Va. Pritchard was retired from South Boston Collection Service. He attended Second Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two sons , Heinz Pritchard of South Boston; one stepson, Michael Chappell, also of South Boston; one daughter, Christina Wilborn of Halifax, Va., one stepdaughter, Angela C. Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Va.; a sister, Sadie Cobb of Ahoskie; a brother, William Pritchard of Ahoskie; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Armstrong Cherry

LEWISTON n Armstrong Cherry, 71, a native of Bertie County, died December 8, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon at Church of God for All People, Windsor, by Pastor Joseph Watson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Cherry was a member of Church of God for All People.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Jenkins Cherry of Lewiston; a son, Armstrong Cherry Jr. of Bridgeport, CT; daughters, Eleanor Parker, Theresa Thompson and Corine Chin, all of Bridgeport, Doris Thompson of Charlotte and Barbara Cobb of Stratford, CT; a sister, Clotene Williams of Lewiston; brothers, Cleveland Cherry and Early Cherry, both of Lewiston; and 16 grandchildren.

Anthony Parker

MAPLETON – Anthony Parker, 45, a native of New York, NY,

died December 13, 2005 at his residence.

Parker was a member of Parker’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Mapleton.

Survivors include his mother, Annie E. Parker of Mapleton;

one brother, Gustavus Parker of Queens, NY; one sister, Monique S. Parker of Bronx.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:45 p.m. Sunday at

Parker’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Interment will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Murfreesboro is in charge.

Mary A. Ayscue

AHOSKIE – Mary Anne Ayscue, 65, of the 100 block of Corella Rd., died December 12, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

She was a native of Warren County, N.C., a daughter of the late William and Thelma Thompson Gupton, a member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church, graduate of Ahoskie High School and a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Charles David Ayscue, two sons; David Ayscue and wife Stephanie, Macon, N.C., Scott Ayscue and wife Paula, Huntersville, N. C.; two brothers, Ervin Gupton and Nathan Gupton, both of Tarboro, N.C.; and four grandchildren, Samantha Ayscue, Katherine Ayscue, Killian Ayscue, and Riggan Ayscue.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2005 at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, N.C. with the Rev, Tom Ravan officiating. The family received friends at the Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 14, 2005, and request in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to Creech Memorial Baptist Church, 501 South Lloyd St. Ahoskie, N.C. 27901 or to the Ahoskie Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 65, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910

KETTERING, Md. n Thomas Vaughan Sr., 68, a native of Conway, died December 13, 2005 at Washington Hospital, Washington, D.C.

Survivors include his wife, Hortense Vaughan; two sons, Thomas Vaughan Jr. and Lionel Johns, both of Maryland; two daughters, Dion Johns and Sandra Daley, both of Maryland; three brothers, Leonard Vaughan and Kenneth Vaughan, both of Conway and Carl Vaughan of Stafford, Va.; seven sisters, Vivian James and Faye Vaughan, both of Charlotte, Roberta Barnes of Maryland, Armenthia Hoggard of Conway, Thersa Gatling of Raleigh, Betty Mae Whitley of Suffolk and Evonne Cherry of Jackson; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. Burial will be in the Vaughan family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
