MERRY HILL – Turnovers kill.

At least they did Monday night.

Lawrence Academy rallied several times during Monday’s contest here, but Bear Grass used a big third quarter to knock off the Lady Warriors 46-37.

&uot;We had some good shots,&uot; second-year skipper Charlie Harden said. &uot;I thought the girls hustled well and never gave up, but we’ve got a lot of things to work on.

&uot;We need to work on our passing game, eliminate turnovers and have a little more patience,&uot; he said.

Lawrence recorded 33 turnovers in the contest while forcing 27 from the Lady Bears.

Bear Grass got off to a quick start, scoring the first six points of the game thanks to a pair of buckets by Lindsey Shaw and one from Lauren Harrison.

Lawrence got on the board thanks to successive hoops from Jodi White and Kendall Street before a hoop from Suzanne Dunlow put the Lady Bears ahead 8-4.

Laurel Taylor buried a trey to cut the lead to one (8-7) with 3:41 to play in the first quarter.

Bear Grass led 11-7 with less than three minutes to play before White had a hoop and senior Kate Gillam had a tip-in with 22 seconds to play in the first to deadlock the score at 11-all.

Gillam had another hoop one minute into the second quarter to put Lawrence ahead 13-11, but the Lady Bears rolled off six straight points to reclaim the lead.

Shaw, Kelly Wynne and Harrison all contributed for Bear Grass, who surged to an 18-15 lead.

Street tied the score when she got a three-point play the old-fashioned way.

Bear Grass had two hoops in 21 seconds to lead by four, but Gillam’s shot with two seconds to play in the half trimmed the deficit to 22-20.

Bear Grass dominated the third quarter, taking an 11-point lead after a pair of Shaw free throws with 4:47 to play.

Lawrence put together a run over the closing minutes of the third to trim the lead to six (32-26) by the end of the quarter. White had a bucket and a free throw while Street added a pair of free throws during the stretch.

The lead was down to four after a three-point play by White with 3:12 to play, but Bear Grass scored nine of the next 11 points to preserve the win.

&uot;I liked our toughness inside,&uot; Harden said. &uot;Jodi, Kendell and Kate battled on the boards.&uot;

The Warriors will host Parrott Academy Friday evening.
