Clemberteen Wilkerson

BOYKINS, Va. n Clemberteen Wilkerson, 36, died November 4, 2005 at Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.

A homegoing service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Newsom by the Rev. Willie Singletary. Interment will be in Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Boykins. Faison’s Funeral Home, Seaboard, is in charge.

Florence Askew

CONWAY n Florence Davis Askew, 88, formerly of Conway, NC, died Saturday, November 5, 2005 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Davis and Mary Lanier Davis of Conway. She had been preceded in death by her son, Billy Davis Askew, and her husband, Lonnie Cornelius Askew.

A native of Northampton County, she was very active in Roberts Chapel Baptist Church in Pendleton where she taught Sunday school for many years. She loved her church and its members and her community, and she had a special place in her heart for the young people. She was happiest when she was helping and doing for others.

She is survived by daughters, Linda A. Fornshell of Raleigh and Cindy K. Peace of Wilson; one granddaughter, Lisa Anne Fornshell and husband Jeffrey Zweben of Chicago, IL; one grandson, Mitchell Todd Askew Pearson of Franklin, Va.; and one sister, Lucille Byrum of Conway.

The family will be receiving friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and her funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Roberts Chapel Baptist Church by the Dr. James Crocker and the Rev. James Hester. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Joseph Hill

WINDSOR n Joseph Hill, 79, died November 3, 2005 in Veterans Hospital, Hampton, Va.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Gilliam Funeral Home was in charge.

Shirley G. Lewter

AHOSKIE n Shirley Grandberry Lewter, 41, a native of Hertford County, died November 3, 2005 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Carpenter’s Shop Church, Ahoskie, by Overseer Luther Cherry. Burial will be in the Newsome family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Lewter was a member of Eveninglight Church of God in Christ Jesus, Windsor.

Survivors include her husband, Johnnie Ray Lewter; a daughter, Tamara Parker of Ahoskie; her father, Willie Roy Parker of Newport News, Va.; sisters, Panetta Parker of Newport News and Rose Marie Michaels of Cincinnati, OH; a brother, Willie Lee Parker of Newport News; and her grandmother, Maggie Parker of Ahoskie.

Edna Walden

RICH SQUARE n Edna Jacobs Walden, a native of Northampton County, died Halifax Memorial Hospital, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Willow Oak A.M.E. Church by the Rev. J.C. Baker. Burial was in the Walden-Jacob family cemetery, Rich Square. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Walden was a member of Willow Oak A.M.E. Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Russell Walden of Rich Square; a daughter, Margaret Walden of Woodvine, NJ; a sister, Erma Jones of Rich Square; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Willie Robinson

RICH SQUARE n Willie Lee Robinson, 47, a native of Northampton County, died November 2, 2005 at Halifax Memorial Hospital, Roanoke Rapids.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square, by Pastor Arthur Clark. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Robinson was a farm worker and a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her his father, Wilmen Robinson of Rich Square; children, Danielle Robinson of Rich Square and Amanda Fields; sisters, Beatrice Taylor and Francine Jacobs, both of Rich Square, Bessie Bryant and Sylvia Robinson, both of Patterson, N.J., Demetria Lassiter of Murfreesboro and Gennie McLane of Selma; and brothers, Norman Robinson, Andrew Robinson, Isum Robinson, Eddie Robinson, Joshua Fisher and Garland Fisher, all of Rich Square, and Danny Jacobs of Raleigh.

Ward G. Blanchard

SUNBURY – Ward Grant Blanchard, 77, a native of Chowan County, died November 5, 2005, in his home.

Blanchard was a retired barber, he operated shops in both Hertford and later in Sunbury. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, he was an honorary lifetime deacon, a trustee, the assistant treasurer of the church and a member and treasurer of the Adult Men’s Bible Class. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served with the 1st Calvary Division and later became a charter member of the American Legion Post 7312.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Hobbs Blanchard; two daughters, Annette B. Weisheit of Clyde, Ohio, and Brenda B. Boseman of Sunbury; three sisters, Allene B. Privott of Edenton, Euna B. Hazlett of Quaker Hill, Conn., and June B. Lenz of Northfield, Minn.; two brothers, Aloise Blanchard of Hobbsville and Paul L. Blanchard of Suffolk; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday in Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe Cockrell and the Rev. Ron Parr. Burial was in the Blanchard family plot at Warwick Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Michael K. Ward

EURE – Michael Keith Ward, 39, a native of Hertford County, died November 4, 2005, at his home.

Mr. Ward was a member of Upper Room Assembly Church in Gatesville, he had worked with Charles Small Paving & Grading Co. and with Charlie’s Septic Tank Service. He had served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his mother, Kay Parker Smith and husband, Arlen of Eure; his children, Heather, Heidi, Hannah and Hunter, all of Colerain; and two brothers, Bryant Earl Ward of Williamsburg, Va., and Mark Aaron Ward of Sand Fork, W.Va

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Proctor and Pastor Eric Earhart. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Margaret T. Knight

SUFFOLK, Va. – Margaret Anne Stedman Taylor Knight, 91, a native of Corapeake, died November 3, 2005. She was the widow of Willie “W.C.” Carey Knight.

Mrs. Knight was a homemaker. She was a member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church and the Nettie Harrell Bible Class. Mrs. Knight was a member of the Ladies Aid Society that became the Florence Brinkley Circle.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Anne Bryant of Suffolk, Billie Taylor McCray of Richmond, Va., Patsy Ruth Privott of Suffolk, Nancy Carolyn Knight Parsons of Southern Shores and Emily Kaye Knight of Charlottesville, Va.; a sister, Sallie Marie Jordan of Hobbsville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Cypress Chapel Christian Church by Dr. John R. Kimball. Interment was in the church cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Cypress Chapel Christian Church New Family Life Center Building Fund, 1891 Cypress Chapel Road, Suffolk, VA 23434. Parr Funeral Home was in charge.

Walter Futrell

AHOSKIE n Walter Lee Futrell, died November 5, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Zion Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Eddie Lee Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Futrell was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn L. Wiggins Futrell of Ahoskie; two sons, Walter L. Futrell Jr. and Willie McCoy Futrell, both of Ahoskie; two stepsons, Donald Futrell of Aulander and Leslie Earl Lee of Ahoskie; three daughters, Linda Futrell of Lewiston, Darlene Barrow and Elizabeth Ann Futrell, both of Aulander; eight stepdaughters, Inesia Harmon of Ahoskie, Laura Lee, Nettie Lee, Catherine Gatling and Margie Bazemore, all of Aulander, Lillie Anderson of Rich Square, Margaret Ann Lee of Roxobel and Joyce Anderson of Conway; three sisters, Josie Fennell, Elnora Futrell and Dolly C. Dukes, all of Aulander; six brothers, Charles and Alvin Futrell, both of Hampton, Va., Edward Futrell of Kelford, James Futrell of Ahoskie, Joseph Futrell of Murfreesboro, George Futrell of Aulander; and 36 grandchildren.

Rachel L. Pope

RICH SQUARE n Mrs. Rachel Lambert Pope, age 61, died at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie on Sunday, November 6, 2005.

Mrs. Pope graduated from Rich Square High School in 1962. She was a member of the Rich Square Baptist Church and was married to Wayne Pope in 1962. Preceding her in death are her mother and father, Lucille Griffin Lambert and King Lambert.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Pope of Rich Square; one daughter, Leigh Ann Pope and Brad Timberlake of Conway, along with his children, Jeffery, Chad, Marshall and Daykota; three sons, David Wayne Pope, Sr. and his wife, Melody of Ahoskie along with their children, David, Jr., Dustin and Tyler, Thomas King Pope and Gayle Bellflower of Rich Square along with their children, Greg and Nichole and one great-grandchild, Christopher, and Michael Earl Pope and his wife, Gina of Rich Square along with their children, Charity Ann, Mickey, Anthony, Arie and Carson, one sister, Mary Ann Crawley and her husband, Taylor of Jackson. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square with the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square on Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m.
